For a change the Wells Fargo investigator, Jim Hardie, is on an easy and pleasant task of delivering a reward check to Joseph Owen at the town Bridger who helped foil a stagecoach robbery. The small town seems nice enough and the people friendly until Hardie asks the whereabouts of Owen. People suddenly shut up and the hotel clerk tries to refuse him a room. As he prepares to go to his room a man appears who has been summoned. He decides to visit Hardie in his room. He tells Hardie his name is Chuck Latimer, a local rancher. With all the local mines closed, his ranch is the only significant business left in the area. Later, Latimer and his sister June interrupt Hardie waiting for supper in a local diner run by Gus Ehrhardt. After Latimer slaps his sister around, Hardie drives them away. Hardie, no longer hungry, is told by Gus where Owen's homestead is located and that he is dead. The next morning Hardie rides there and soon surmises what has happened.
