Adam's defense attorneys, Dillon Vizcarra and Nicholas Michailos, claim the four murders were in self-defense. Jury Trial Begins - February 7, 2022, Pasco County, Florida: After a seven-year delay, the jury trial for retired Tampa Police Captain Curtis Reeves Jr., now age 79, begins. He stands accused of murdering Chad Oulson, age 43, on January 13, 2014. Reeves was outraged over popcorn having been thrown on him by Chad Oulson during a matinee movie performance at the Cobb Theater in Wesley Chapel, Florida. The theater has changed its name since 2014 and is now the Grove Theater. Before the shooting, during the previews on the big screen, Reeves had admonished Oulson to stop texting and to put away his phone. Reeves then reported Oulson to the theater management. Tempers of both men escalated from there forward. Reeves' criminal defense lawyer claims that Curtis acted in self-defense when the popcorn was thrown at him, while the state's prosecuting attorneys argue that Mr. Reeves was short-tempered and unjustified in the shooting and killing of Oulson. In the end, the jury returns a verdict of "not guilty."

Oshkosh, Wisconsin: Joshua Aide is on trial for the August 4, 2020 nighttime murder of his ex-girlfriend's father, age 59; the attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend, age 33; and the attempted murder of a family friend, age 57. Joshua was arrested a few hours after the shootings. Joshua claims he was ambushed by all three of them, and that they were plotting to kill him and obtain money by cashing in on his life insurance policy. In the end, Joshua Aide was found guilty by the jury and was sentenced to "life in prison plus 80 years, with no possibility of parole" for shooting his ex-girlfriend Rebecca Borkowski; fatally shooting her father James Gruettner; and shooting John Miller, a family friend of the Gruettners.
