On the night of September 6, 2018, 26-year-old accountant Botham Jean was murdered when off-duty Dallas Police Department patrol officer Amber Guyger entered Jean's apartment in Dallas, Texas and fatally shot him. Guyger said she thought that she was entering her own apartment, due to the apartment floor-plans being identical. Amber was actually on the wrong floor of the apartment building. She shot Botham because she thought he was a burglar. On October 1, 2019, Guyger was found guilty of murder and was sentenced to ten years in prison.

Eric Alexander Campbell, age 24, of Alvin, Texas, was found guilty of two counts of first-degree murder, first-degree burglary, second-degree arson, robbery with a dangerous weapon and two counts of cruelty to animals in the December 31, 2014 deaths of Jerome Faulkner, age 73, and his wife, Dora Faulkner, age 62. He received a sentence of life in prison without parole.

Leon Jacob, a former Houston, Texas medical doctor was found guilty in a murder-for-hire plot and was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years behind bars. He schemed to execute his ex-girlfriend Meghan Verikas and also the ex-husband of his new girlfriend. Jacob thought he was paying a hit-man for the murders, but instead, he paid an undercover police officer, who he believed to be a hit-man, over $20,000 in cash and jewelry to kill two people.
