After years of anguish under her brother's shadow, Miao hopes to attend art school and finally be rid of him, but her drunken father's unmindful act lands her at the same nothing special high school that Fen (her brother) attends. Her efforts to stand apart and make friends with Wang Ke-ke, the school's most popular girl, are continually thwarted by Fen's socially awkward activities, provoking Miao to lash out via her martial art skills.

The siblings win a pair of restaurant vouchers from a dance contest but can't stand each other to abide going together. School physician Dr. Zhao steps in to resolve their contention: the first to find a friend to take wins the vouchers; however, instead of picking their true best friends (for Fen, Kai-xin; for Miao, Miao-miao), each sibling aims for a classmate whose acquaintance also amounts to a personal prize. For Miao, that would still be Ke-ke, but for Fen, that would be Class President Yu Le, a true ugly ducking who, without glasses or braces on her teeth, has transformed into a beautiful swan.

Looking forward to escaping his stiflingly rich family, Wan Sui transfers to Normal High School for a normal experience and a chance to make real friends. Unbeknownst to him, kid brother Wan Xing (every bit as emotionally detached as their corporate boss mother) has selected Normal School specifically for Sui solely based on the presence of Shi Fen - a student so bad he's unclassifiable - so that Sui's horrible first day will be his last. To monitor the progress closely, Xing enrolls, too (much to his disgust). Meanwhile, Miao tries to join in on Ke-ke's weekend party.

As Wan Sui's (and Wan Xing's) first day at Normal High School continues, the school demands to know who brought the drone and who broke down the stall door in the girls' bathroom. Miao-miao, recognizing young Wan Xing's genius, turns to him to solve these mysteries (not knowing it was her friend Shi Miao and new student Wan Xing himself behind them). Meanwhile, as Wan Sui continues to be the new school darling, Shi Fen's repeated efforts to put him in his place continuously fail.

Episode 5

When Cheng Hao-nan and gang nab Shi Miao for collateral, she discovers brother Fen's latest trend in owing others money and gives him a good trouncing for it (frightening onlookers by its violence). Afterward, an in-class essay assignment on "home" softens her as she writes pleasing pros while recalling the harsh reality of her parent's divorce and Fen's efforts to soften it for her sake.

Fen devises scheme after scheme to get the apartment electricity turned back on (and a concert ticket to avoid a beating from Cheng Hao-nan), but almost nothing comes out as planned. Returning home with birthday cookies for Fen, Miao comes face to face with the "Cafeteria Boy" she crushes on, which Fen misreads as her having a crush on Wan Sui. Misbeliefs continue as Wan Xing thinks Fen a Svengalie with a hold on his elder brother that must be stopped, and Sui's inability to recognize marbles supports Fen's belief in Sui's abject poverty rather than his abject wealth.

Though Fen makes the most of slight feelings of illness to stay home from school, Miao knows he's faking yet takes precautionary steps by giving him some of their dad's medications. Unfortunately, it isn't cold medication she grabs, and Fen falls victim to the side effect of induced sleep for the day. A videographer seeks to film a school promo video. The class volunteers Ke-ke but the man likes Miao, so Ke-ke goads Miao into attacking her to fake an injury and gain school sympathy for herself while creating public resentment against Miao.

Episode 8

At a banquet for single teachers, a resolution forms to keep eyes on the weak students for the upcoming mid-terms. Coincidentally, poor student Shi Fen wagers top student Yu Le over raising his grades: he wins she accepts his date to the beach; she wins he keeps his distance. Miao-miao, forced to eat her mom's cooking (damaging her vocal cords), needs Shi Miao to step in for her voice actor duties. Shi Miao soon acquires a fan base.

Episode 9

The midterm results are in. Though Shi Fen applied himself and did unusually well, his missing paper keeps him in the bottom three of his class. Outrage only nets him a three-day suspension (which won't stop Kai-xin and Sui from blocking his departure and sleuthing the matter). In the process, the security guard connects with Dr. Zhao. Shi Miao, meanwhile, does poorly and takes it out sharply on best friend Miao-miao, who scored top of her class.

Episode 10

Amped for his beach date with Yu Le and Kai-xin, Fen spots a zit on Miao's forehead, heralding puberty's arrival. Fen struggles to keep her as content as possible while also attending his promised date. At the pier, Cheng Hao-nan discovers Wan Sui among the elite; Mr. Li acts swiftly to keep Sui's secret. Miao later awakens to find Fen gone and Sui and Xing in her apartment, where the boys confront the unfamiliar commoner task of how to boil water. Xing receives his first scolding.

Episode 11

Fen wishes upon a shooting star: a week away from school. Wish granted, and the student body finds itself sent to an army boot camp while authorities clean up a meteorite that fell upon school grounds. Commander Zhao Jian-qiang takes charge to instill military discipline among the students, confiscating cell phones and snack foods, and privately favoring Zhen Kai-xin. As Wan Xing desperately seeks escape, KP duty befalls Shi Miao (a kitchen idiot) and Miao-miao. Fen will advise Miao in exchange for sanitary napkins. And a hen becomes a focal point.

Episode 12

Wan Xing suffers a heatstroke but overdoses on medication for it, becoming inebriated. Between desires to dance with everyone and bouts of crying, he interjects blazing insight into several people's lives, bringing unlikely new friend-pairings to Zhen Kai Xin and to Wan Sui, and a much wanted mother figure for Shi Miao. When he finally sobers up, Xing finds himself the absolute fan of a fellow student, one who takes on a golden glow that none but Xing can see.

Episode 13

Ke-ke, wanting payback for Shi Miao "stealing her thunder," snaps a compromising photo to embarrass her on the Internet, but an opportunity also arises to get her in trouble with Commander Zhao Jian Qiang by having her enter the abandoned medical building (which all believe is haunted). Different reasons prompt several students to enter, mostly frightening one another, but none realize a malicious presence indeed awaits one of them inside.

At his mother's insistence to focus on studies, Zhen Kai-xin quits the school basketball team, and it befalls lazy teammate Shi Fen to take his place. When Kai-xin subsequently runs away from home, Mrs. Zhen finds him at Shi Fen's house and hauls him back. At school in Mr. Lu's office, she claims that weak ankles run in their family, preventing her son from a professional basketball career. When she threatens to take her son to another school and brings Shi Fen's name into it, Shi Fen (listening at the door) bursts in and offers to no longer be Kai-xin's friend in order for him to stay. When Kai-xin really does injure his leg, and with the school's basketball honor at stake, Shi Fen discovers just how much nobody wants him on the team.

With the basketball final coming up, Shi Miao finds brother Fen asleep in bed rather than training at dawn's first light, as declared. Years of dealing with Miao's bullying finally show Fen how the basketball team can win without star player Zhen Kai-xin. Meanwhile, Wan Sui becomes Dr. Zhao's student medical assistant and looks around for someone on whom to practice an unfamiliar technique.

Episode 16

As classes continue, the rival basketball team from Professional High School (named after a repair service) comes to Normal High School. The red carpet is literally rolled out for this event, with Coach Tien unwilling to share her moment of personal glory with anyone. Shi Miao gives Fen her good luck charm for the game, but after Miao-miao reveals Miao's astrology components in retrograde that make everything she touches unlucky, Miao must retrieve her charm. As a rival player's sob story pulls at all but Fen's and Coach Tien's heartstrings, Fen hopes a broad scheme will bring Kai-xin back (who's been suffering depression and anxiety away from his team).

Mid-shot, Shi Fen recalls meeting Zhen Kai-xin, back when he and Hao Ren were friends, back when his father lost his sobriety effort, and back when rival team captain Sun Bin-bin demanded Shi Fen spike Zhen Kai-xin's drink so he wouldn't pass a urine test. Those events of two years ago in fact also brought many people in close proximity for the first time who later came to know one another more openly.

Episode 18

Theft of Wan Sui's favorite stuffed toy leads the school security guard to hide his close association by calling his less-than-smart fellow conspirator a mugger. Shi Fen immediately accosts the "mugger" to detain him. Principal Yuan, presuming Shi Fen a thug student, pulls the boy back, allowing the thief to escape. Hearing a few details of the falsified incident, Yuan swings the other way for reflected glory by lauding Shi Fen as a hero before gathered reporters. Miao, also called in, basks in the glory too, but when their drunken father arrives, believing the worse of his kids, their family secret comes out in a most embarrassing fashion. In avoiding going home while also addressing a suspicious matter for Wan Sui, Shi Fen ends up on a boating trip with the school security guard. A heated comment from Shi Miao later on presents Shi Fen with a new, exciting thought: the security guard is his real father.

Episode 19

Waking from a bad dream, Shi Miao fears her brother leaving her for a new family unit comprising the school security guard, the school nurse, and himself. Striving to keep these people apart, she gets brought up short by the repeated label of "control freak." As Zhen Kai-xin helps Shin Miao out, Wan Yi fears Shi Fen knows more about his revenge plan than he lets on. Getting the boy drunk to find out the extent of his connections to Sui and Xing, Wan Yi winds up drunk himself and spills the beans of his own revenge plan against the Wans to right a personal wrong. He, too, takes pause at a label applied to him by others - "a different man now."

Wan Yi's secret kidnapping plan falls through thanks to his partner, who carries on alone, only to be thwarted by automated redirects to voicemail. Wan Xing, discovering his brother's plight, puts out the word. When the first rescuers fail and the second can't formulate a plan, Wan Xing steps up to confront the kidnapper, but it takes an unexpected third party to complete the task. The rescue fosters a happy reunion but comes at costs, thanks to Mrs. Wan, and Shi Miao suddenly appreciates her brother.

Episode 21

With a school break coming, Shi Miao plans out many self-improvement activities but later feels betrayed by Miao-miao. Shi Fen's efforts to gather support for Wan Sui's grief (over Wan Yi's disappearance) take a nosedive when Sui comes to school in a chipper mood. It must be a facade, which Fen determines to break through a private auction before the school break begins. Little does he know of the Wan brothers' cunning plan to waylay their severe mother's fears through emotional movies. Zhen Kai-xin disappoints Shi Miao and breaks a heart when he breaks the Happily Looking For Your Brother record.

Episode 22

While attempting an impressive pose, Miao dislocates both shoulders. With her arms bandaged to her sides, and their father kicking them out to visit relatives for New Year's Eve, Fen discovers lucrative trading amongst kin who mistakenly think Miao lost her arms. Their last stop: an eye-opening visit to rich and elitist relatives. With the con ended, Fen drops by home, only to find an eye-opening site of another sort.

Episode 23

Still under the New Year holiday (and as a favor to his badgering neighbor), Shi Fen agrees to watch young, rambunctious Daxiong for the day. One rule: no candy. Taking their charge to a New Year's carnival, Fen and Miao promptly lose him and meet Sui and Xing. Sui, struck by lightning, envisions his life as the star of a reality TV series, whereby an ethereal Miao-miao reveals the one person who's signed a life-long contract to stand by his side. Facing a penalty for losing Daxiong, Fen asks his mother for financial help, and Miao asks Fen never to leave her alone again.

Episode 24

"Legend of Empress Feng," written by White Kite, becomes an online sensation. To pay for Miao's membership to access the novel, Fen schemes to take Hao Ren's summer break assignment book and sell the answers, making Hao Ren depressed from Fen's tirade over the poor outcome of good students. His self-worth shattered, Hao Ren aims to throw his excellence away. Meanwhile, Shi Fen discovers the true identity of author White Kite - right there at Normal High School.

Episode 25

Shi Miao scores highest in her class for once (for which she credits a lucky charm fashioned from a burned pot), yet the reactions of others fail to meet her expectations. Meanwhile, Wan Xing, openly rebelling against his mother over Grandpa Yi's disappearance, runs away from home with Wan Sui in tow. Consequently, he finds that his assets have been frozen. Though living "in the open" both disgusts and terrifies him, his true friends rally to celebrate his birthday, which brings about an appreciation of older brothers.

Episode 26

At word of maternal Grandpa Wang Da-jun's death, Shi Miao and Shi Fen embark on a long bus ride to the funeral (where they receive several unexpected responses). Much as Wan Xing tries to console his brother, Wan Sui still weeps readily over the absence of Grandfather Wan Yi. The austere Mrs. Wan finally calls to present Wan Sui a choice - stay at school or come back home.

Episode 27

Shi Miao's absence leads Shi Fen to believe she's run away from home. With their father's sleeping medication also missing, she could be planning suicide as well. Tracking her by cell phone produces no result (other than a few surprising but irrelevant details about their friends). In the end, she's safe and sound - but transformed.

Episode 28

Shi Miao joins Cheng Hao-nan's gang (under the leadership of Boss Fang), who aims to bring out her defiant inner bad girl. At his wit's end, and learning their father used to be in a gang himself, Shi Fen has Shi Zhen call up his old cohorts - Big Car, Towel, Teacup, Brush, Cover and Toilet Lid - for a scared straight intervention - three of whom respond dutifully but grab the wrong kids. A final confrontation at a tattoo parlor determines what Shi Miao's direction in life will be.

Episode 29

At Shi Miao's insistence, her mother takes Shi Fen to live with her and her husband, "Uncle" Wang. Miao Miao-miao and Zhen Kai-xin intervene to bring the siblings back together, but to no avail. While Shi Miao deals with the desired absence of living under her brother's shadow, Shi Fen deals with the sudden lifestyle change from poverty to wealth. Furthering the sense of separation, Uncle Wang enrolls Shi Fen in another school, forcing the boy to completely move out and bid all his friends farewell.

Episode 30

Shi Miao visits a psychological service center after seeing Fen everywhere, unaware that he's been involved in a traffic accident. Their friends decide not to tell her of her brother's fate. Eventually, whether he's dying in a hospital, heading off to school in the States or technologically erased from Shi Miao's memories, he seems pretty much out of her life at last.
