Frank MacBride and Pete Ryan are private investigators who were on opposite sides of the law. Frank was a cop and Pete is a con man Frank pursued and eventually arrested. They are hired by a lawyer to help him prove his client who's a convicted safe cracker, didn't rob a safe. The damning piece of evidence is that some of the items that were stolen were found in his car. Frank and Pete try to find out who the actual thief by approaching a fence and he tells them a cop, the one who arrested the safe cracker, is the one who robbed the safe and planted the evidence in his car. But despite all this, Frank says they don't have enough to clear the man. So he thinks they should try and get him to steal again. They learn he likes to gamble so that's how they plan to get him. But Pete is worried he might get wise to them.
