Episode 1
The Fiscal and his wife witness the death, of the daughter of a family friend, while skiing when she misjudges a slope. He now had to discover whether this accident could have been prevented.
Episode 2
An episode from the final series, aired in 1976. A married man, Alan Forsyth (played by a young Martin Shaw with a doubtful Scots accent), is involved in a minor road accident while driving home from Inverness, resulting in the death of a sheep. But when the police investigate, there is forensic evidence suggesting the man was not the driver of the car as he claims, and that he is concealing the fact that the actual driver was a woman (played by a very young Jan Francis). From the police report, his wife, Fiona, suspects he is having an affair and that he is trying to conceal this from her by his lies to the police. He refuses to name his companion, and the fiscal is uncertain whether there are enough grounds for a prosecution. The plot develops through various twists and turns arising from the marital difficulties which the flood of ensuing revelations causes Forsyth, as the police investigation turns up one complication after another, including the fact that the woman is under the age of consent, while the fiscal struggles to decide whether any prosecution would really be in the public interest.
Episode 3
Police spot young Adam Corrie near some closed shops and after a scuffle is arrested. Shortly after his former employers Ballentine's goes up flames so he must be to guilty of arson.
Episode 4
Menzies is tipped off that a man, named Craig, could be in the area stealing cash from unsuspecting females but when a girl is found badly beaten on the beach it could be connected.
Episode 5
Glasgow gangsters are intimidating local farmers for money. Front man Charlie Fletcher is on trial but implicates Eddie Magill, who just happens to be selling a horse (Murphy) to Dr Roberts.
Episode 6
A jeweler is murdered, cash and the watch of Alex Murchison are stolen. A boy is found near with blood on his clothing but the police need to find the cash and watch to prove their case.
Episode 7
Gamekeeper to Major Innes Penderleith, Bruce Meikle finds himself in hot water when he sinks a rubber dingy of poacher Ken Guthrie in which he nearly drowns
Episode 8
Menzies informs the Fiscal that the police surgeon won't sign off on a potential suicide of Mrs Graham. She is found gassed in her bed but a large number of tablets are missing but no water.
