Ordered by his boss, police detective inspector Richard, to pick up the preliminary autopsy report of a female adult suicide by hanging, sergeant Fanny Frater goes berserk when he recognizes the victim as his own long-estranged daughter Christina. Refusing to consider she may have been suicidal, he forces reluctant forensic pathologist Jackie Sowden at scalpel-point to go into all details, insisting on any possible homicide scenario. He then takes off with stolen evidence, ignoring alerted Richard's orders to back down from any official proceedings.

Danny forces her to betray the bigger dealer, known only as Jaisal.

Danny follows Maia's lead from her brothel to he old pump-house club-restaurant, the lair/cover of her drug supplier Jaisal. To his surprise, that's the new identity of Jake Baktra, a former close police colleague, who owes him for help to be just sacked, not charged, when found corruptly involved in a drug gang. He even calls off his goons when Danny strong-arms him to elaborate on the drugs, and offers a deal: he'll talk if Danny helps him 'interrogate' a prisoner, career criminal Ryan, about betraying boss Jaisal to rival big fish Hamza. After Danny gets him -even using illegal force- to confess so, Jaisal warns him ti stay out of this wasps nest, which is far more dangerous then he can grasp.

Danny goes to the gym where Ryan, his former police partner, whom he made talk as Jaisal's prisoner, works out. This informal, illegal interrogation turns to minor torture to make him talk about the drug network and Christina, who was recorded stepping into his car in the fatal night. Ryan is surprisingly patient and cooperative, even calls his present junior police partner for an alibi, but Danny keeps hounding him, even speeds the car deliberately till they crash, leaving Ryan behind for dead, actually unconscious.

Having pressed Jaisal and Ryan ruthlessly for information, Danny believes the mastermind is race gambling king Harry Carr, whom he meets at the tracks. He admits to a close, complex relationship with Christina as lover and boss, firmly denies to have hurt her. A final confrontation is inevitable, both came prepared to play hardball, Harry gives a chilling demonstration he stops at nothing.
