In Missouri, Sam and Dean track down a shapeshifter that has killed five victims. In each case, it takes on the form of a victim's loved one, killed, and then left its duplicate to take the blame. But when the Winchesters become separated and then reunite, they soon realize that one of them is the creature they're hunting.

David McNamara is missing since a car accident on a mountainous road on a misty night. His wife Molly appeals to passing-by Dean and Sam, who soon suspect the problem stems from a nearby house, where they find the bloody traces of a ghost. They work out owner Jonah Greeley went mad after his wife's death and his own suicide and decide to ritually eliminate his ghost. That doesn't stop the mortal danger, so a whole other ghost drama most be handled.

Following visionary Sam's recent nightmare about the former Winchester home in Lawrence, Kansas, where the present dwellers, Jenny from Wichita and daughter two small kids, are suspiciously accident-prone, Dean reluctantly accepts to drive there. Dean and Sam reassure Jenny but follow up on the kids fear of a flaming creature in the closet. They consult Missouri Moseley, their father John's old medium friend, and together with the spirit of Mary Winchester, confront an evil poltergeist, but a second ghost intervenes and someone hides behind Missouri.

Driving to New Orleans in Dean's treasured black Chevrolet Impala, the Winchester brothers are jailed by a desolate hills town's bully police chief, absurdly blamed for a fatal car crash caused by a ghost Impala. They are freed by the chief's deputy and 'sissy' kid brother Michael, who hints at a series of such tragic incidents and shies away from explaining. The brothers persuade him to visit the accident site, where the Ipala strikes again, as well as the chief, but the Winchesters deal with all their way.

The Winchester brothers go investigate a weird series of cattle mutilations in a Colorado small town, which look like vampire bites, and hence attracted specialized vampire hunter Jason. Dean takes pity on a young schoolboy who is cowardly bullied by a thugs gang. Giving the knave a shirt self defense class, Dean discovers his frustrations also concern a physical transition and the troubled rapport with his father, a recluse cattle-farmer. While the Winchesters work out the surprisingly pacific nature of what proves a traumatized vampire family, Jason is hell-bent on their destruction, even if that endangers Dean.

Three years ago, Sam said farewell to his life as a hunter with his brother, Dean, and his father, John, and went to a university to study law. There he met a girl named Jessica, who would later become his girlfriend. During that time, a mysterious incident happens to two of Jessica's friends: they die after bleeding from their eyes. The demon's hand draw's near Jessica's back, too. Meanwhile, as hunters, Dean and John are investigating the same incident.

When the Winchester brothers allow themselves some relaxation in a Vegas casino, Dean enjoys it too much and starts believing in his luck after a major win. But as soon as he picks up an ancient Japanese coin, it turns into horribly bad luck, not just in games but in their entire lives. Resarching the coin, Sam realizes it comes with the evil Japanese god of poverty, against whom no remedy is known. Disposing of the coin fails every time, while Dean is almost driven insane as he's followed by every disaster, ruining them and wrecking their possessions, even his prize impala, while they seem destined for jail or cemetery.

Before the night of the full moon, prostitutes are being bitten to death by wild dogs, but this time a male lawyer was killed. Sam and Dean think that it may be connected to the werewolf legends and visit the victim's subordinate, Madison. Madison takes the place of Sam's now dead girlfriend in his heart and he decides to protect her, but she has a horrible secret.

Sam's premonitions are getting stronger. After a man dies Sam and Dean visit the family and meet Max, the man's son. Though Max claims his family was happy Sam and Dean have their doubts.

The Winchester boys' father John examines a town where numerous demonic signs occur. He finds the link is orphan Lily, around whom people die since she was orphaned by a fire like the one that killed his wife, so he's determined to find and kill the arsonist demon.

When Dean's Impela breaks down in a Louisiana backwater, he insists to repair it himself. Strolling around bored, Sam gets interested in the stories of locals and passersby who spotted a scary lake monster, which fits the description of a South East Asian water spirit, yet nobody incurred lasting injuries. The Winchester boys join a party to hunt it down, but Sam comes to realize that might be futile and unwise for a surprising reason.

A series of bizarre murders occur in Colorado and a hunter named Daniel Elkins is among those killed. Sam and Dean think that it was done by a vampire and head out. Once there, much to their surprise, they find their father, John. Needless to say, the brothers are very happy and, following John's instructions, they set out to find the Colt, a gun stolen by the vampire that killed Elkins. Though Sam can't help but complain about the fact that John won't explain anything to them.

Episode 15

The Winchester brothers are delighted to be reunited with dad and in possession of the Colt, the only weapon that can destroy the yellow-eyed demon who killed their mother. Father John however spoils the mood by bossing them around like children and doubting if they can handle the responsibility. Non-yellow demon Meg lures the trio to a lair in Manhattan, where a bitter battle ensues. Sam refuses to follow paternal orders to shot him too in order to destroy her, resulting in Henry and Dean landing in hospital.

The Winchester family suffered serious injuries during the fight with the demon. Sam and John regain consciousness, but Dean stays in a coma. Dean, whose soul was separated from his body, wanders around the hospital till he meets a Reaper. Dean is uncertain whether to die or stay in this world as a ghost and become the same as the demons they hunt. Meanwhile, Sam and John decide to take certain actions in order to save him.

Dean visited Missouri because he struggled with the true meaning of John's last words... "Save Sam, or kill him". Some old photos remind Dean of Mrs. Lyle, who was Sam's teacher. He remembers how he and his father saved Sam, despite what his future held.

Leaving the words, "I'll be killed by the black dog!" behind, an architect jumps off his own mansion and dies. Sam and Dean think that it's possible that it's the work of their old demon enemy and start investigating the truth. They learn that 10 years ago, other geniuses died in similar ways. Sam and Dean think that the "Crossroads Demon", who grants people's wishes in exchange for their lives, is behind the case. In order to save the next victim, they take a big gamble and risk their own lives.

What's more, his mother Mary, who is supposed to be dead, is alive and Sam is married to Jessica, who was supposedly killed. Dean and the others gather together to celebrate his mother's birthday. Even though Dean was perplexed by this everyday life he started feeling happy, til he realized the truth behind that world and then.

When Sam comes to, he learns that Lily, Jake and other people who are holding special powers have been gathered together in a ruined ghost town. There, Sam and the others learn about their cruel fate and every detail about the dreadful plan imposed on them by the Yellow Eyed Demon.

In a surprise ending, Jake stabs Sam and kills him. Devastated by grief, Dean makes a deal with the crossroad demon to bring Sam back; as a trade-off, Dean gets one more year to live, after that -- his soul is toast.
