1957. The Petrukhin family attend the Goodwood races where they meet Kathleen and Richard Shaw MP. When their eight year-old son Sasha Petrukhin wanders off, there is a frantic search and Kathleen eventually finds him. Over lunch, Sasha falls ill and is rushed to the hospital. A few months later, Sasha is preparing to go to Downham House boarding school. His 17 year-old sister Hannah is soon to be presented as a debutant to the Queen at Buckingham Palace, yet she can't help but question the futility of learning how to courtesy in a world that is shaken by the threat of the atom bomb. Both Sasha and Hannah dread their near futures. Kathleen Shaw unexpectedly visits Samuel Petrukhin at his hearing aid business as she is hoping he will have a suitable device for her aunt. He shows her his latest invention, the staff locator - a new piece of equipment that will revolutionize the way people communicate within hospitals and other businesses. In preparation for her London debutant season, Hannah begins etiquette classes. She is meant to be in Miss Laidlaw's class - the A Class - but chooses to attend the more casual B class run by Nicholas Halliday. Samuel and his colleague Courtney become suspicious when they realize they are constantly being followed by several men as they attend hearing aid fittings. At half term, the Petrukhins attend the Shaw's for lunch where they meet Lord Arthur Wallington. Samuel explores the garden and discovers something curious.

BBC plot: Hannah arrives at Buckingham Palace, but is too late to be presented. Samuel meets two men who are interested in his invention, Denning and Mr Field. He learns that they are from MI5 and he is sworn to secrecy. The Petrukhins attend a fete at the Shaw's. Samuel invites Kathleen to attend the demonstration of the staff locator, but does not tell her it is for MI5. He demonstrates the staff locator at the military base with Courtney and Doreen from the factory, as well as Miriam, Hannah, Sacha and Kathleen in attendance. During the demonstration, Kathleen leaves suddenly in tears and Hannah runs after her. Kathleen confides in Hannah that her son Anthony went missing five years ago when he was aged 21. Kathleen goes to see Mr Spearman, a private investigator, but there have been no new developments in Anthony's case. Hannah befriends Esther, a young deaf woman who works at Samuel's factory. Hannah's etiquette teacher Nicholas persuades Hannah to take part in a civil defence exercise to prepare for nuclear attacks.

Samuel is tasked by Mr Field to find out the names of those attending the Shaw's latest party. After the party, Mr Field and Denning are unhappy with Samuel's lack of detail. Samuel leaves the meeting, not wanting their business if it means being blackmailed. Courtney breaks it to Samuel that the company is close to bankruptcy. They must acquire more orders in the next few weeks. Knowing he needs the MI5 order, Samuel goes back to Mr Field's office and is tasked by him to photograph all the guests at the Shaw's upcoming fishing trip. Clutching at straws, Kathleen visits Sacha's school to see if she can glean any clues about her son Anthony's disappearance. Samuel and Miriam receive an anonymous letter, explaining that Hannah did not meet the Queen, and has been skipping many of the parties and balls. When they confront her, Hannah runs to stay with Esther. Once there, two of Esther's friends Joel and Kevin, arrive with a gramophone. Kevin and Esther are evidently an item. Samuel and Courtney meet Denning, Mr Field, and Freddie Lawson at the airfield and agree to set up the staff locator demonstration. Samuel delivers his photos from the fishing trip.

Kathleen visits the boarding house in search of Anthony, but has no luck. Armstrong explains to Samuel that they have reason to believe that people connected with the Shaw family could be enemies of the state. Not knowing who to believe, Samuel confronts Mr Field.

Samuel got off the air base shooting mildly, but Field's office suffers another attack on its secret HQ, even the 'Russian' dog is killed. Sasha is readmitted without punishment, even shown Anthony's secret correspondence. Warned by Lord Arthur Wallington the danger is far from over, Samuel goes in private hiding after sending his wife to distant family, and teams up with Kathleen,who seeks her son even more frantically, now with MP husband Richard Shaw's full support. Hannah is torn between her lower class jazz friends and the debutantes party circuit, which expects her to host a party at a lofty location, but just such one allows her lipreading friend, a factory employee, to report some desirable flirtatious young male party guests seem in the know about Anthony's disappearance.
