Over one term, a documentary crew films the everyday activities at an average Australian public high school. Three individuals stand out - Mr G, an ego driven drama teacher on a mission to change the face of drama education; Ja'mie King, a bitchy private schoolgirl on a student exchange, set to make her mark; and Jonah Takalua, a mischievous schoolboy from Tonga with the odds stacked against him. The only characteristic they have in common is they are all played by Chris Lilley. Hilarious, absurd and frequently shocking Summer Heights High reveals a world where small issues become huge, social groups are important, careers are built, young minds are moulded, hopes are shattered and dreams are realised.

When the head of the Drama Department goes on emergency leave, Mr G is put in charge. He appoints himself Director of Performing Arts and upsets other staff by flaunting his self-imposed authority. Ja'mie has her first day at Summer Heights High and is not impressed with the student assigned to show her around. She joins the popular girls and insults them with her views of public education. Jonah finds it difficult to stick to his Polynesian Pathways contract but reveals his secret desire to learn how to read.

A student tragedy inspires the theme for Mr G's new musical. The school principal has reservations but that doesn't stop him composing his latest masterpiece. Convinced a Year 7 boy has the hots for her, Ja'mie decides to date him. The other girls are shocked at first but are then convinced it's a serious relationship. Jonah agrees to a dare which backfires and jeopardises his chance to challenge his breakdancing nemesis at the Junior School Dance.

Mr G takes severe measures to avoid including disabled students in his musical. Ja'mie goes on a hunger strike, blackmailing the school to let her put on a Year 11 Formal. When this fails, she is allowed to give a presentation to the school about the advantages of having a Formal. Jonah and his friends are forced to become mentors to a group of year seven students and an incident at the pool could have a serious impact on his future at Summer Heights High.

Jonah gets into an altercation with his breakdancing nemesis, Keiran, after he laughs at Jonah during a Polynesian themed assembly.

The episode begins with Mr. G directing his new Drama play "Mr. G the Musical" revealing that Toby will be playing the lead role as Mr. G, meanwhile, Ja'mie sets up for the year 11 formal with a few of her friends in the teacher's lounge. Meanwhile, Jonah and his father are in the principle's office informing Jonah that he will be expelled and transported to another school, once Jonah leaves he heads to Gumnut Cottage. The next scene shows Ja'mie and her friends preparing for the social as Ja'mie finds her date has dumped her as she found out that Ja'mie wasn't' a lesbian, before showing Jonah sitting in class at Gumnut cottage, looking depressed. The student counselor walks into Gumnut cottage and attempts to violently drag Jonah out of the cottage and succeeds much to the dismay of Jonah's friends. Later that night Ja'mie shows up to the formal in a limo with her ex-boyfriend Sebastian, and the formal night goes on normally. At the same time, Mr. G's musical is playing in the Gym, as the show finishes up, Mr. G announces that he is coming back to teach at Summer Heights High. The next day, Ja'mie reveals that she and Sebastian are a couple again and Mr. G reveals that his dog, Celine is actually still alive after her accident. Later on, Jonah goes to Gumnut cottage for story day and reads a story he wrote about his time at Summer Heights High, and includes his opinion on the teachers. As he finishes, he hugs his teacher and leaves the school with his friends, Ja'mie walks out of school with Sebastian before meeting her best friend Rhianna at the gates. Jonah and his friends jump onto the road and start break dancing while yelling at the cars, and it is reveled that he has written dick-tation on his year 7 nemesis's bag and on every car in the staff parking lot. The ending scene shows a the student from the introduction running out of Summer Heights high, as the camera pans out of the School, we see that Jonah has tagged a giant Dick-Tation on the roof of the school. A final solute to his days at Summer Heights High.
