The sleepy Nova Scotia lake town Sullivan's Crossing is slightly shaken up when native Maggie Sullivan, a Boston neurosurgeon, finally visits home after years, being suspended pending an FBI investigation of alleged financial malversation in the practice she shares with her fiancé. It doesn't change the grumpy attitude of her abandoned widower father Harry 'Sully' Sullivan, who runs the boat-building firm. His right hand, local hottie Cal(lum) Jones, ignores her rude attitude with a smile.

Just when Maggie, who can't settle back into her "backward" hometown, plans to return to Boston, her attorney insists that another lawsuit for malpractice renders that unwise, and her employer informally suspends her pending the case. While she starts opening up to locals, especially ever-helpful Cal, who learns she's Sully's daughter, fate makes her help a dementia-riddled elderly local who relied upon neighbors for help, and have him hospitalized before he gets into critical trouble. Then her fiancé Andrew Mathews pays a surprise visit.

After her fiancé Andrew returns to Boston, Maggie's US lawyer warns her to stay away, as her malpractice victim's mother now also sues her for stalking. Although three obtrusive frat boys are held short at the Mi'kmaq first nation's tribal festival, teen Chelsea Smith, who pouted to be dragged along on holiday by her parents, goes missing afterwards. While fire and police departments quickly start an official search, Cal accompanies Maggie into the forest, where trial elder Frank Cranebear finds all the youths engaged in poaching.

Frank Cranebear has found and scolded the poaching rat boys, but the trio panics and one shoots Frank, then decides to run and tie up Chelsea when she protests that they must call for help. Cal and Maggie work out what happened, give Frank first aid, and talk to the boys until the ambulance and police arrive and the runaway is returned. Cal hears about Maggie's legal problems, discloses that he left the lawyer rat-race, and offers some advice. Sully stubbornly ignores that his campsite is virtually bankrupt, even granting a client an extension despite being denied more credit.

Cal learned about Maggie's legal predicament, explains he quit law after his wife's tragic demise and moved into the lake town to her taste, then insists to prep Maggie for her trial, or hopefully just a preliminary hearing back in Boston. Sully never digested losing Maggie to her mother's second love, so when that Walter, a smug surgeon who as stepfather inspired Maggie to follow his example, checks in, first refuses to rent him a room, later is provoked to a fight and further neglects the camping site, which is already on the brink of bankruptcy.

In Boston, Andrew follows Maggie's mother's suggestion to treat her to a surprise dinner to celebrate his new job and shows her the house he buys for their impending wedding, but she wants to concentrate on her upcoming hearing, where she does badly despite Cal's sensible cross-questioning training, attacked by the emotional plaintiff in-between sessions, so a jury trial is inevitable. Cal bonds with Ray over chess and caring for once-beloved ones. Maggie rushes back when she hears about Sully's cardiac crisis, found out in dire trouble by Frank and Edna Cranebear after the bank refuses to discuss his credit needs, stating that his only option is to sell real estate.

Ray has died, so Maggie returns for her funeral, where Cal is praised for his chess-mate companionship. She stays at Sully's, yet absurdly rages at the removed mural, blaming him as if he were a voluntary "absent parent". Andrew also visits and suffers blisters to hike around her home lake, but realizes she isn't committed, and after starting a jealous fight with Cal over a poker game, concludes that she sides with his rival and dumps her. Store assistant Jackson Canaday needs encouragement to resist his parents' fighting over his future, unwilling to join his father Tom's police force.

As Andrew concludes that he has no future with Maggie and returns to single life in Boston, Cal is free to bond further with her, taking her along to his favorite forest spots around the lake, including a waterfall she never dared to dive from--until now with him. Kaleb faints in a spasmodic seizure attempting to start his first climbing lesson with Jackson Canaday, who can only run for help. Maggie comes, diagnoses a balance organ crisis in his ear, fixes it, and promises to teach him how to do so himself. Sully is left alone as Frank and Edna Cranebear decide to visit his Alberta kin for some weeks, but Frank can't bring himself to tell Sully, so Edna forces it on the last day. Cal confides that his ever-abbreviated first name is California.
