Attorney Ted Black and partner Stuart Lane are about to merge with a firm run by Ted's ex; associates Rick and Erica vie for positions in the firm, but when the merger hits a snag, Ted, a former prosecutor, must step into a role he holds in contempt.

Ted meets the prosecutor handling Lester's case and learns from Amanda she's ruthless. Kevin unearths things about Lester which makes Ted doubt him. Samantha tells Stuart he can't make Rick head of entertainment unless he bags a big client. When he learns that Dylan Pryor who is being handled by Erica has an issue with the producer she signed with. He dares Erica that he can help her. Erica agrees.

Upon learning that Lester's wife has been having an affair with his partner, the man he is suspected of killing. Which gives the prosecution a possible motive . Ted tries to see if Lester knew but by how he reacts Ted believes he didn't. So he goes to see the wife and learns she hired Stuart to represent her in divorce proceedings. Ted goes to see Stuart and when Stuart wants to tell him something he blows him. Later he sends to Ted his father's will that names Stuart as executor and that his father wanted to be buried next to his other son. And Ted freaks out. Because of this Ted has Eric's meet with one of his clients, a sitcom star but because she doesn't follow TV Leah gives her info on him. When she meets him he asks for something out of the ordinary that Leah thinks she has a solution but it almost backfires on her.

The studio wants Lester's name removed from the film. Ted and Erica meet with Lester and he doesn't want to do that. They tell him he can give the studio what it wants or ask for an immediate trial on his murder charges. He chooses to push the trial. Ted asks Amanda to help him prepare for Smith. And when the studio learns his stance they threaten to not release the movie. Ted decides to try something and goes up against Samantha. Samantha has Rick work with Stuart when an actor is arrested by his neighbor the actor is holding something back but they do their job. Tedrecalls a time when a friend helped him.

When Kevin learns from Lester the truth about the murder and chooses not to he tell Ted. Smith puts on a strong case which forces Ted to put Lester on the stand and afterwards Smith produces a witness who claims that he killed his partner. Ted then confronts Lester who tells him what happened but he doubts him so Kevin tells him what Lester told him which makes him furious at Kevin. He then needs to ask someone what he should do. And uses one of Smith's ploys against her. Ted reflects on how his relationship with Samantha ended.
