There is even a dry river Styx with its own armed gatekeeper Charon who collects tolls and keep out those who don't belong. Richman refuses to pay for Robert Dowdell and Bill Hart (Cody Bristol and Red) who stay behind. Across the river, alone, Stoney meets the devil himself, Dean Harens, who, far less sinister than Richman seems miscast. Harens wants Stoney's soul and tells Richman to "get him." They want Stoney to cut Megaton the horse that hurt him, from the herd and lead him to slaughter at the head of the line. Even though Stoney realizes that his and Megaton's free spirits are the same, in his desperate plight he agrees to do it. But Warren Oats (Ves Painter) who arrives late at the bridge in a convertible Volkswagen with an umbrella, gets Cody and Red to pretend they found gold in the river bed. This lures Charon away and Ves rides in to literally save the day. Ves tries to stop Stoney from driving the horse in. Although, Stoney knocks Ves down, he reconsiders. He tells Richman he won't let him kill Megaton. Richman says it's his horse. Stoney says he'll sell or else. A fight ensues and Cody and Red ride in: Charon having actually found some gold in the river being too distracted to stop them . Ves, of course avoiding the battle, gets the horse into a trailer. And they all drive off leaving Ves' car behind. When they find a safe place to stop, Stoney uses Megaton to get back into shape for next year.
