The weakened landing party manages to escape and hide from their captors in a hollow outdoor sculpture. Meanwhile, Uhura, seeing the men become completely useless and constant daydreamers, takes command of the Enterprise. She assembles another landing party (all-female) to rescue the first. They win a battle over the female inhabitants, who, willing to release Kirk and his party, don't know where they are. Using a locater device, they see that the men are about to drown in the sculpture, which is filling with water from a rainstorm. Uhura's party runs out to the courtyard and blasts the sculpture, freeing the men. Using the transporter in a tricky way, the men's life force is restored, returning them to their handsome, viral selves.
