The war between the Klingons and the Federation is rapidly progressing into a full scale conflict and Starfleet has decided that something must be done. Now that Odo has told Chancellor Gowron is a changeling, Sisko is ordered to infiltrate into the Klingon Empire and expose him. Sisko selects O'Brien, Worf and Odo as the people to go with him, there's only one problem. Odo is still having a great deal of trouble adjusting to his new life as a "solid". His work isn't fulfilling anymore and he's not interested in joining the mission. Sisko doesn't take no for an answer. Meanwhile, the plan is taking shape, with only one problem. Gowron moved his headquarters to Ty'Gokor, heavily fortified and located in a tachyon grid protected asteroid field deep in Klingon space. Gowron is also protected by the Yan-Isleth, his personal security force. Approaching the chancellor unnoticed seems impossible.

The crew of Deep Space Nine is on Torga IV in the Gamma Quadrant. The planet is believed to contain cormaline deposits. While determining the feasibility of a mining operation, suddenly a Jem'Hadar warship crashes into the surface. The crew is dead. Sisko decides to salvage it. Then another Jem'Hadar ship arrives. They attack. The crew is forced to retreat into the crashed ship. Engineer Muniz is badly hurt by a phaser blast. Then suddenly the attack stops. It seems the Jem'Hadar are not prepared to wage war inside the ship. A Vorta is even prepared to negotiate and the Jem'Hadar try unusual sneak tactics to gain access. Sisko gets a very strong feeling there's something going on, that there's an object so important in the ship, that the Jem'Hadar can't risk destroying it. While the crew try to find out what it is and the troops of the Dominion lay siege, time is running out for Muniz.

It's different from what he expected though, all Julian talks about is prion replications, amino acid re-sequencing and quantum dynamics. Jake would rather write a report about the doctor battling Cartalian fever, for example and thinks that readers would relate to that more. Jake's wish for more action may come true when a distress call is sent in from the Ajilon Prime colony. They are under attack by the Klingons. They urgently need medical supplies and a doctor in a hospital near the front line. Bashir doesn't want to take Sisko's son with him, but Jake is able to convince him otherwise. Jake is delighted, but is the young reporter really prepared for the horror that is war? Meanwhile captain Sisko hears the Farragut will pick the two up the next day, but gets more anxious as time progresses.
