It is fourteen months since Jax, Clay, Tig, Bobby, Juice, and Happy went to jail on federal gun charges. Jimmy and Stahl are dead, murdered by Chibs and Opie, respectively. Tara has discovered JT's love letters to Maureen, hidden by Maureen in Jax's belongings before he left Northern Ireland. In the letters, JT confesses that he knows Clay and Gemma are plotting his death. Kozik has transferred into SAMCRO, and prospect Eric Miles (Frank Potter) has been patched in. However, upon their release from prison, SAMCRO find Charming a drastically changed place. Jacob is now mayor, and his plans for a huge housing estate, Charming Heights, are pressing ahead, with Oswald handling construction. The San Joaquin Sheriff's Office has absorbed Charming PD, with Unser retiring, and the town now under the jurisdiction of Lt. Eli Roosevelt (Rockmond Dunbar), who has no love for SAMCRO. Behind the scenes, they're also targeted by AUSA Lincoln Potter (Ray McKinnon), who's fully aware of their new distribution deal with the Real IRA and their involvement in the deaths of Jimmy and Stahl. Meanwhile, Jax proposes to Tara and posits a possible future out of SAMCRO, Opie and Lyla get married, and Gemma becomes worried about Unser.

Jax decides that for the sake of Tara, Abel, and his and Tara's son, Thomas, he must leave SAMCRO. Gemma finds out about JT's letters to Maureen, but when she tells Clay, he concludes that if Jax had read them, he would have done something, and so convinces Gemma that Tara must have read them and not told Jax. By dumping the bodies of the Bratva on the site of Charming Heights, SAMCRO create a problem for Jacob, as local violence could cost him the final few investors he needs for the eminent domain buyout, meaning the land would revert back to its previous owners. Álvarez brokers a meeting between Clay and Jax and Romero 'Romeo' Parada (Danny Trejo), a representative of the Galindo Cartel, SAMCRO's new customer, who are looking to build an arsenal of not just guns, but heavy artillery. However, Jax is unimpressed when he learns Clay has negotiated to mule uncut cocaine from Galindo to the Mayans. Jax recognises that it's about Clay getting enough money on which to retire, and as a result, they strike a deal; Jax will support Clay in the vote to mule for Galindo whilst Clay will let Jax walk away from SAMCRO when the time comes.

As the Galindo vote looms, SAMCRO is divided. In searching for JT's letters, Gemma discovers Tara has been looking into the circumstances of his death, and has learned that Unser helped cover up the truth. As Potter learns of SAMCRO's deal with Galindo, he explains to Roosevelt that Galindo needs weaponry to fight a blood feud with another cartel, Lobo Sonora. However, as he has no informants inside Galindo, Potter decides to move onto a contingency plan to make SAMCRO the primary target of a RICO investigation. As Clay negotiates with their ammo supplier, who want more money now that SAMCRO are selling in larger volume, he tells Bobby about Jax wanting out, and promises him the presidency at that time, despite already promising Jax that the presidency would go to Opie.

SAMCRO narrowly vote to mule for Galindo. Potter reveals his plan to get someone inside the group to flip - Juice's birth father is African-American, meaning he is violating the membership code, and with this information, Potter has Roosevelt intimate to Juice he may reveal his heritage. Suspecting that Gemma may be looking for JT's letters, Tara makes copies of them. Meanwhile, when SAMCRO meet up with SAMTAZ on their first weapons run for Galindo, they discover SAMTAZ have been dealing meth. However, when Clay orders them to shut down their operation, they refuse. Back in Charming, Gemma befriends Roosevelt's wife Rita (Merle Dandridge), who has started a committee to try to save a local park.

Tara tells Piney about what she read in JT's letters; JT was planning to meet the Kings and Kellen in Northern Ireland to end SAMCRO's relationship with the Real IRA, but was killed before the meeting could take place. Having discovered the identity of Romeo's number two, Luis Torres (Benito Martinez), Potter's investigation gets back on track. As part of his plan to use RICO against SAMCRO, he tells Otto about Luann seducing Bobby prior to her murder, with Otto reaching out to Gemma to seek retribution against whomever may have killed her, and SAMCRO deciding to go after Caruso. When Piney confronts Clay about the letters, both Clay and Gemma separately turn to Unser to find the letters in Tara's office. Meanwhile, Roosevelt presses Juice to begin feeding him information, and Opie discovers Lyla has been lying to him.

Unser finds Tara's copies of the letters, but not the originals. Reading them, however, puts a strain on his and Clay's friendship; Unser is unimpressed that Clay told him JT needed to die because of a brewing war with the Mayans, rather than the truth about the IRA gun connect. Potter instructs Roosevelt to pressure Juice into getting a sample of the Galindo product, so as to test how far Juice is willing to go to keep the truth about his father buried. However, in doing so, Juice is forced to steal a kilo from the shipment. As SAMCRO go after Caruso, Clay comes up with a plan to interrupt Charming Heights; using Caruso's Asian contacts to act as fake investors for Jacob, thus making him think he is secure, and then pulling out at the last minute. However, Bobby lies to Otto, telling him that the still-living Caruso is actually dead. Meanwhile, Lyla confronts Opie about sleeping with Ima, and Tig's daughter Dawn 'Margeaux' (Rachel Miner) seeks his help.

Clay tells Romeo that Tara has become a threat to their operation, and asks him to have her killed. However, anticipating Clay's plan, Unser fakes a death threat against Tara so as to afford her protection. After being caught by Miles trying to put the drugs back before Romeo arrived at the storehouse, Juice is forced to kill him and frame him for the theft. When Juice proves reluctant to give Roosevelt the sample until he has met whoever is pulling Roosevelt's strings, however, Roosevelt and Potter clash over how best to proceed. Meanwhile, SAMCRO is caught in the crossfire when the Mayans' drug processing plant is attacked.

In the wake of the death threat against Tara, Lyla flees Charming, leaving Opie devastated. Feeling backed into a corner, Juice attempts to kill himself, but fails. SAMCRO goes on high-alert after Galindo's war with Lobo Sonora spills into Oakland, pushing Bobby to question Clay's leadership, and call for a vote on a new president. However, before they can vote, the compound is stormed by Lobo soldiers, who throw the head of SAMTAZ's president into the clubhouse. Piney tells Clay he has one day to get SAMCRO out of the Galindo deal, or he will reveal the contents of the letters. When Torres arrives in Charming to deal with the Lobo situation, he assures both SAMCRO and the Mayans that Lobo has no network in the United States, but when he interrogates one of their soldiers, he learns something unexpected. Meanwhile, at the fundraiser for Charming Gardens, Clay presents an idea to Oswald.

Clay and Oswald jointly donate enough money to save Charming Gardens in an effort to turn public opinion against Jacob, so that when the eminent domain vote goes before city council, they choose to revert the land back to Oswald. As the realisation of the gravity of the Galindo situation dawns on Jax and Tara, they decide it's best for her to take the children and leave town for a while. Chibs learns of Juice's suicide attempt, and approaches Jax for advice, but Juice continues to keep both in the dark as to the real reasons why he tried to kill himself. Clay's murder of Piney causes concern for Gemma and Unser. When Roosevelt tells Potter that Juice is no longer willing to work for them, Potter decides to reveal to Otto that Bobby lied about Caruso's death. The Irish Kings call Clay to arrange a sit-down with Romeo prior to agreeing to sell heavy weaponry to the cartel. Meanwhile, when Torres and Álvarez inform SAMCRO that Lobo is attempting to secure customers for their cocaine in California, Clay concludes they must be dealing with the 9ers.

After Tara discovers her copies of the letters gone, she confronts Gemma, who lies about her complicity in JT's death. Potter reveals the scope of his RICO investigation to Juice, telling him that in the light of Bobby's betrayal, Otto has agreed to turn on SAMCRO and give up his knowledge of an historical pattern of organised crime. Explaining he now has enough evidence to prosecute, Potter tells Juice that he is really after the Irish Kings, and promises he will let SAMCRO continue to exist if Juice can confirm when the Kings are meeting Romeo. After Jax manages to negotiate a way out of the 9ers situation, Bobby tells him it is his destiny to be president of SAMCRO. Learning of Clay's duplicity regarding his agreement to make Opie the next president, Jax decides to expedite his exit. When Tara attends a medical conference in Oregon, Jax goes with her, and they get a glimpse of life outside of SAMCRO. However, they soon discover that their reality is hard to escape.

Following the botched hit on Tara, she is distraught to learn she may lose partial use of her hand, and becomes convinced Jax will never leave SAMCRO. When Tara receives an unexpected job offer from Oregon, Margaret tries to convince Gemma not to get in the way. Gemma deduces that Clay ordered the hit, but when she confronts him, he viciously beats her, much to Unser's horror. However, when he suggests they rat Clay out for Piney's murder, she persuades him not to, saying it would hurt SAMCRO to do so. Similarly, when Jax learns what happened, she tells him he has to let her deal with things her way. Meanwhile, Tig confronts Clay about his reduced role in SAMCRO's affairs, Clay's plan to dupe Jacob with fake investors runs into a problem, Otto outlines what he wants from Potter to turn on SAMCRO, and Wendy returns to Charming.

In raiding the Lobo camp to end the feud north of the border, SAMCRO pay a heavy price, with the death of Kozik. Juice confides in Chibs about his father, but is surprised by his reaction. Upon learning what happened to Gemma, Tig resigns as sergeant-at-arms. Caruso's Asian investors elect not to back out of the deal with Jacob, meaning Charming Heights can now proceed unimpeded. Opie discovers Piney's body, with Unser telling him that Clay was responsible. Roarke, Brogan, and fellow Irish King Galen O'Shay (Timothy V. Murphy) arrive in California to meet Romeo and Torres. Meanwhile, Jax comes up with a plan to get SAMCRO out of drug muling, and Otto signs off on his transcripts for Potter.

To Be, Act 1

Due to Otto's testimony, Bobby is arrested. Opie storms the clubhouse, shooting Clay, but is unable to kill him before Jax intervenes. Jax tells SAMCRO that 9ers were responsible, and Tig, blaming himself for not being there to stop the shooting, decides to exact revenge against Laroy, but things go horribly wrong. Juice gives Potter the information on the Galindo/Irish Kings meet. Tara remains convinced Jax will never leave SAMCRO. Gemma tells Tara that Clay killed Piney and ordered the hit on her in his desperation to stop the contents of the letters coming out, and Tara agrees to give them to her. Lenny tells Jax about Otto's deal with Potter, prompting Jax to suggest to Romeo they postpone the Real IRA meet. However, Romeo assures Jax that Otto has not flipped and there is no federal investigation.

Gemma gives JT's letters to Jax, explaining that JT was planning on getting SAMCRO out of gun running, but Clay killed him first, although she hides the information concerning her and Unser's role in the death. She also tells Jax that Clay killed Piney and tried to have Tara killed, telling him his only course of action now is to kill Clay, and assume the presidency. Tara gives Jax a syringe, telling him he should kill Clay so as to make it look like a complication after his surgery, and that once it is done, she will be ready to leave Charming with him. As Potter and Roosevelt prepare to storm the Galindo/Irish Kings meet, it transpires that neither Romeo nor Torres is who anyone thought them to be. However, without Clay to oversee the deal, the Kings are unwilling to negotiate.
