When the Mayans, a Latino gang led by Marcus Álvarez (Emilio Rivera), steal their stockpile of weapons and burn their warehouse, SAMCRO is placed in a difficult position, as they've already taken payment for the guns from the 1-9ers, a powerful African-American gang led by Laroy Wayne (Tory Kittles). As SAMCRO president Clarence 'Clay' Morrow (Ron Perlman) plots their revenge, his step-son and club vice-president Jackson 'Jax' Teller (Charlie Hunnam) finds an old document written by his dead father John 'JT' Teller (voiced by Nicholas Guest), one of the Sons' founders. In it, JT writes about the direction in which he wanted SAMCRO to go; nothing like the gun-running direction in which Clay and his wife Gemma (Katey Sagal), Jax's mother, has taken them. When they locate where the Mayans are hiding their weaponry, Clay calls upon Jax to bring his friend Harry 'Opie' Winston (Ryan Hurst) back into the fold. However, Opie has recently been released from jail after refusing to testify against SAMCRO, and has promised his wife Donna (Sprague Grayden) he'll go straight. Meanwhile, Jax's estranged wife, Wendy (Drea de Matteo), takes a drug overdose, leading to an emergency C- section and life-threatening surgery for her and Jax's son, who's ten weeks premature. Complicating matters is that the case is being handled by neonatal surgeon Dr. Tara Knowles (Maggie Siff), Jax's childhood sweetheart, who has recently returned to Charming after ten years away.

As Tig's plan to earn enough money from the bare-knuckle competition failed to play out, and with the IRA gun payment looming, SAMCRO scrambles to come up with the cash, leading Jax and Opie on an unexpected adventure. However, when Clay and Tig go to meet McKeavey, they encounter a surprise. As both men begin to question Jax's commitment to SAMCRO, Darby presents Álvarez with details of their IRA pipeline. In return, he asks Álvarez to kill Clay, and, in the ensuing confusion, the rest of SAMCRO, allowing the Mayans to take over the IRA gun connect and leaving Charming open for the Nords. Álvarez, however, has his own plans.

Hell Followed

Having saved Tara from a vengeful Kohn, Jax must dispose of the body and keep Tara calm. In retaliation for the failed assassination attempt on Clay, SAMCRO prepares for all-out war with the Mayans. At the same time, Filip 'Chibs' Telford (Tommy Flanagan) must use his limited medical knowledge to keep the seriously wounded Cameron Hayes (Jamie McShane), SAMCRO's new Real IRA contact, alive. Having survived the Mayans' assassination attempt against him as well, Darby looks to make peace with SAMCRO. Meanwhile, the they're tasked with avenging the murder of McKeavey, Unser has a stern warning for Clay, and Donna has an ultimatum for Opie.

Better Half

By promising to sell the Mayans guns in the future, Clay averts a war, but must now deal with the fact that ATF know about the Real IRA pipeline. Hale goes behind Unser's back and gives Stahl info on the recent shootings, bringing her back to Charming. Focusing her investigation on the murdered Port Commissioner who had McKeavey killed, Stahl plans to use RICO Act to side-step her lack of direct evidence. To this end, she decides to target the women surrounding SAMCRO, pressuring those with the most to lose; Tara, Donna, and Cherry. She also arrests Luann Delaney (Dendrie Taylor), wife of incarcerated SAMCRO member 'Big' Otto (Kurt Sutter), and tries to trick him into giving her information on old crimes in an effort to get Luann out of prison. As Cameron starts to recover and Clay makes plans to get him out of Charming, Opie must convince Donna not to leave him, Jax plans to use Unser to get a message to Otto, and Cherry tells Gemma about her past.

Cameron and Cherry are smuggled out of Charming, but Bobby is arrested for murdering the Port Commissioner. With Jax and Opie supposedly the only witnesses, and with Opie suddenly missing, Tig becomes convinced Opie has turned on SAMCRO. Although Clay reluctantly agrees, Jax refuses to accept Opie would betray them. As Abel grows stronger, Wendy returns from rehab, causing Tara some conflicting emotions, which aren't helped when Gemma decides to interfere.

The Sleep of Babies

With Opie and Donna reconciled, Stahl's tactics become increasingly questionable, and Hale finds himself cut off from the investigation. With most of SAMCRO's cash tied up in the warehouse re-build, but in need of money for Bobby's defence, Clay decides to sell their surplus weaponry to the Mayans, leaving themselves defenceless. However, in secret, Clay alerts the 9ers to the deal, telling them that if they kill the Mayans after the sale has gone down, they can keep the weapons. Wendy realises Gemma is playing her and Tara against one another, and has a warning for Tara. However, Tara's later attempts to assert her claims over Jax backfire. Meanwhile, as Jax confides in Opie regarding his doubts about Clay's leadership and how the current state of SAMCRO deviates from his father's original vision, Clay and Tig, convinced Opie is secretly working for ATF, hatch a desperate plan.

The Revelator

In the wake of Tig's accidental killing of Donna, the Sons prepare for her funeral, as Clay convinces them the 9ers were responsible. With Laroy betraying Clay and storming the Mayan gun sale before the money was handed over, SAMCRO find themselves in a precarious position; the 9ers have their surplus weaponry, the Mayans no longer trust them, and they have no cash. As Clay and Tig wrestle with their conscience, Stahl must come to terms with her own complicity in Donna's death. Meanwhile, Hale gets some advice from Unser about how to handle his suspicions regarding the murder. Determined to avenge the death of his daughter-in-law, Piney decides to go after the 9ers on their own territory. When SAMCRO get some bad news from their lawyer, Jason Rosen (Tom Everett Scott), they must call in every favour they can to try to find where ATF are keeping the witness against Bobby, with Clay planning to send Tig to kill her. Jax, however, decides to do things another way, whether Clay likes it or not.
