Sons of Anarchy, aka SAMCRO, is a motorcycle club that operates both illegal and legal businesses in the small town of Charming. They combine gun-running and a garage, plus involvement in porn film. Clay, the president, likes it old school and violent; while Jax, his stepson and the club's VP, has thoughts about changing the way things are, based on his dead father's journal. Their conflict has effects on both the club and their personal relationships.

After Jax tracks down Tara, she's shocked when he asks her to save the boys, telling her she's free to take them wherever she wants. He and Tara then offer Patterson a new deal; if all charges against Tara are dropped, he will give himself up as the sole source of the gun used in the school shooting. Anticipating spending at least seven years in jail, Jax makes Bobby president, and tells Chibs to help Tara in any way she requires when he is inside. However, unaware of Jax's decision, Gemma, distraught after Nero breaks up with her, kills Tara. When Roosevelt arrives on the scene, Juice shoots him, and helps cover up Gemma's involvement. In Oakland, the Mayans kill several 9ers and form an alliance with Lin, supported by the Byz-Lats. In prison, Jax tries to make peace with high-ranking Aryan Brotherhood shot-caller Ron Tully (Marilyn Manson). When Patterson releases him, she warns him against seeking revenge for Tara's death. Meanwhile, Wendy comes out of rehab early and discovers Juice has been crashing in her apartment to hide from SAMCRO, the Mayans open a new chapter in Stockton, CaraCara reopens as Red Woody Inc., Jax suggests that he handle Diosa Norte and Nero focus on Diosa del Sur so as to avoid conflict given Nero's ties to Lin and Álvarez, Patterson asks Unser for a favour, and Jax, Nero, Álvarez, and Lin sit down to try to avoid a costly turf war.
