Episode 1
It's been six months since she kicked Danny out and Gemma is becoming content with herself. Then Raif, who is a much younger man, enters her life. He is persistent and Gemma is reluctant to go out with him because of the age difference. She finds Raif conceited and walks out on the lunch. However, they reconcile and start having a good time together. After chatting with her mother, Gemma decides to break it off with Raif. Gemma is struggling to work with Mrs Mitchell, a mother of seven, who is having trouble with one of her children.
Episode 2
Gemma is feeling listless and meets Julia for lunch, who recommends that Gemma should forget about love and have more fun. Gemma keeps getting phone calls from a mysterious man. During a power blackout, she finds out that the calls are from a young man from an upstairs flat. She goes upstairs and to bed with him. However, in the morning she begins to regret her actions. Then Julia turns up and says she was wrong and that Gemma was right all along.
Episode 3
Gemma and Sebastian remain good friends after their night together but that is all. She is having trouble sleeping as her mind is continually in turmoil with the worries of the day. The doctor feels that it is caused by anxiety, mainly from Gemma's job as a social worker. He gives her some ideas to try, the main one is to go on a holiday. Gemma decides to go to a remote cottage in the country, which doesn't impress her mother.
Episode 4
Gemma returns from holiday in the country and becomes upset when she finds out that her goldfish has died. Her mother also arrives to give Gemma the sad news that her great aunt Cissy has died. After the funeral, Gemma is stunned to find that aunt Cissy has asked that she scatter her ashes over Boxley Heath, a task she finds upsetting. To thank her, Cissy leaves Gemma a sum of £3000.
Episode 5
Gemma has received the £3000 left to her by great aunt Cissy and has to think about what to spend the money on. She decides to buy a car and Sebastian offers to reteach her how to drive. Sebastian also endears himself by getting Gemma another goldfish, this time a female. Despite being a serial womaniser, he finds himself attracted to his latest woman, Rosie. At work, Gemma is delighted to tell Mrs Hayward that the council has finally allocated her a new house, only to find out that she has had enough of her swindling husband.
Episode 6
The relationship between Rosie and Sebastian becomes more serious. However, Rosie stuns Gemma when she tells her that she already has another lover, Rex. Rex finds out about Sebastian and comes around and hits him, requiring Gemma to do some patching up. Rex comes around to Gemma's flat to apologise.The next day, Rex telephones her to ask her out on a date, which goes well. They end up in bed together but the relationship has a rocky start. Gemma hires a woman, Iris, to clean the flat but Gemma finds her officious attitude off-putting.
Episode 7
Gemma's mother is feeling a bit ill but the news from the doctor doesn't make her happy - she is starting to go through menopause. She decides to go on a short holiday into the country where Howard surprises her by booking into the same hotel. Sebastian proposes to Rosie in an unconventional way but she accepts. Rex is unhappy with Sebastian still having breakfast with Gemma, which is the cause of an argument that leads to them breaking up. In an odd twist, Rosie stops Sebastian from coming down for breakfast as well.
