Episode 1
Gemma decides to break up with her boyfriend Danny after finding out about his affair with one of her friends. She decides to change her life around, which includes quitting her job. Danny doesn't want to separate and proposes to her.
Episode 2
Gemma's mother is working on Gemma, trying to get her and Danny back together. Gemma needs to get employment and applies for a job as a social worker. To help her chances, she takes a voluntary job at a citizen's advice bureau. Unfortunately, one of her first customers is Danny. Meanwhile, Josie is having a lot of trouble deciding what to wear on a date. She has so much trouble, she decides not to go on the date altogether.
Episode 3
Gemma is determined to stay living alone and talks to an old friend, Julia. Julia has a different outlook on the situation cannot understand Gemma's position. Danny comes round to Gemma's place and gets into her bed. Just as she is about to join him, Julia rings up after finding her husband having an affair. Josie has a new boyfriend who happens to have a university degree, so she decides to do some reading to broaden her mind. She also has a surprise for him - she's pregnant.
Episode 4
Gemma starts her social work, trying to advise an elderly couple who are getting into debt to an electricity company. Gemma's mother reveals that she has being having an affair with a man for two years and that she is going to get married again. Gemma is stunned to learn that he is only 35 years old. However, when he learns her mother's real age he walks out, temporarily. Josie tells her boyfriend that she is pregnant but he says that he isn't the marrying kind. Bernadette starts to envy Josie's situation.
Episode 5
Gemma was planning to spend the weekend with her mother and Julia. However, they both cancel, which leaves her with nothing to do. She locks herself out of her flat and calls Danny to bring his key. He comes round but then says that he has accidentally left the key behind. Danny ends up taking her to his rural cottage, but it doesn't quite end up how he expected. Josie's pregnancy is continuing and she is starting to worry about how the baby will affect her body, particularly as she starts suffering from morning sickness.
Episode 6
After the incident at Danny's cottage, Gemma decides to allow Danny back into her life. However, they are having restless nights together. He proposes marriage but Gemma rejects his offer, telling him to ask again in 12 months. She finds being with him unsatisfying and decides to ask him to move out, this time permanently. Josie and Bernadette become very philosophical about relationships between men and women. Josie and Geoffrey look like moving into their own bedsit.
