Following Jessica's conviction, the family destroys the Tates' drawing room and Benson announces that he will not clean it up; Chester has seen too many Wile E. Coyote movies and has dull knives, but a heavy cast-iron pot does fall on his head during his suicide attempt in the kitchen; Benson tosses Bob. Later, Burt and Danny drink beer and help Jodie and Carol move into their new apartment and Dennis Phillips brings a fern. Jessica tells Mary her plan to write a book on prison reform and is cheerful until she realizes there is no sex in prison--then Mallu appears with stars in his eyes. Benson visits the jail and is temporarily overcome with grief, and Jessica asks him to be strong. Tim takes Corinne to meet his mother, who takes the "hands-on" approach to welcoming her new daughter. At her sentencing hearing, Jessica appeals to the guilty person; in a surprise move, Chester confesses to the murder of Peter Campbell; Mallu is happy because he wants Jessica. The Tates all gather in the kitchen, unable to sleep, and Jessica finds words of wisdom about Chester for their kids. Chester is lonely in jail until he gets a cellmate: Dutch Leitner, wanted in 10 states for murder. Mary confronts Burt at 4:00 in the morning. Dutch tells Chester his plan to break them out of jail. Danny tries to get out of marrying Elaine by convincing her he is impotent. Carol is pregnant.

Carol tells Jodie the rabbit died and the news hits Jodie hard. Tinkler is looking for Chester and Dutch. After dinner, Benson and the Tate children start disappearing to the basement; Jessica wants her dessert and hopes they are having a surprise party.

Burt joyfully compares heterosexual sex to pretzels. Dutch does not want Eunice to become important to him. Jessica and Mary indulge in sibling rivalry regarding who has a bigger secret; Jessica is confused that Dennis could be pregnant. Benson gives away his best friend, Corinne, at her wedding to Tim. Tim's mother acts badly but the priest is just more confused. Are priests really allowed to marry now?

Chester wakes up from his coma with amnesia; he thinks he is Gunga Din or Gloria Swanson.

Mary visits the Tate house with her apple-walnut coffee cake. Both Eunice and Corinne are depressed; Jessica also thinks she is depressed but Corinne says she is horny. The girls start attacking the cake and talking about sex. Danny has goofy ideas about tax shelters and he loves Elaine. Sally threatens to quit and turns up the heat on Burt.

Jessica loses Chester, goes looking for him and gets a strange history lesson from Jodie that makes Mary giggle. At work, Burt tries to break up with Sally and apparently, makes her cry; when he leaves, Sally makes a phone call. No one can find Chester, not even the Major's dog, Sigmund. Benson has an old friend on the police force who takes the Missing Person report on Chester. After meeting the Tates, Officer Chicken hopes his pal, Benson, is being paid enough. Elaine and Danny take a quick break from sex, when two masked men sneak into their bedroom to drug and kidnap Elaine.

Chuck and Bob confound some of the Campbells with a new act. As they wait for Elaine, Mary confronts Burt about having an affair and he confronts her about the professor; Burt asks Mary's forgiveness when he learns what happened, then tells her he slept with a fat old woman. Jessica is ready to fire Det. Donahue because she has feelings for him; he charms her into not firing him (and a kiss) until Benson gets hold of him and warns him what will happen if he hurts Jessica. George convinces Benson he really cares for Jessica and Benson believes him, letting George make them both cocktails. Elaine finally gets home, but she has been shot. Danny takes her in his arms and tells her to save her strength; Elaine tells him she is happy because she loves Danny and because she is home. As the Campbells watch in disbelief, Elaine dies in her husband's arms.

The police show up and while the inmates hide the officer asks Benson his name; Jessica and Billy introduce themselves as Benson's wife and son, and when asked about the two extra plates, they tell the officer a wacky lie. The officer leaves the cabin but watches through the windows as Dutch and Eunice emerge. At the Campbells' a grieving Danny wants to kill the kidnapper; meanwhile, Chester is finally over his amnesia and remembers his family. But now he's a hobo and when he brags about his $400 watch to a fellow hobo, the latter conks him on the head and relieves him of the watch--and his memory.

The families gather at the Tates' with Det. Donohue to mourn Chester and celebrate his life by telling wild, funny stories that have everyone laughing until The Major makes a rousing speech...about the wrong man. Sally visits the Campbell home to tell Mary that she made the first move on Burt; Mary is distraught about Sally's youth and figure. Sally sucks up to Mary, talking diets and weight loss, until she explodes her bombshell: Burt is also cheating on Sally (and Mary) with an 18-year-old. . . but this is a lie. Jodie travels to Texas to visit Carol and has the honor of being the "first homo" her mother has ever met. Carol shocks Jodie and breaks his heart by telling him she doesn't want him to be her child's father and will never let him be involved. At a shelter, a hobo pesters Chester for his soup; Chester associates "pester" with "Lester" and comes to think that his name is Lester Pate.
