During the American War of Independence, insurgent Ichabod Crane, an English-born professor and civil rights pioneer, is among the pile of victims of a headless, ax-wielding Redcoat. Two centuries later, both are resurrected when their graves are disturbed. Sheriff August Corbin, whose county includes Sleepy Hollow village, is among the latest axed victims. However he leaves notes which are found by his headstrong deputy, lieutenant Abbie Mills, and the arrested, fascinating Ichabod, whom captain Irving orders to be evaluated in a psych ward. Ichabod gets visits from the ghost of his wife Katrina, who reveals being a good witch from an order fighting the evil one in league with the four riders of the Apocalypse, which includes Death, in the shape of the Redcoat.

Detective Luke Morales not only finds courted Abbie unresponsive to resume dating, late fellow deputy Andy Brooks's ghost comes warn him to stay well away.

Ichabod makes the link, so she's found walled-in by a thorny vine, which is awoken by attempts to cut it, while her bodyguard is already killed. The book collection inside strikes Ichabod as identical to his wife's, which a letter snide proves. He wonders about her Covent's witchcraft part in evil taking over.

The Golem

Ichabod feels he must find out about his son Jeremy and why Katrina never told him. So he gets the help of Sin-eater Henry Parrish, overcoming his warning. It works, Crane learns that Jeremy was horribly abused in a grim priest's war orphanage until he used his inherited witchcraft to conjure a Golem, while Katrina's powers were bound by her coven, which also disposed of 'dangerous' Jeremy. But Ichabod's journey awoke both the golem and Moloch.

The Vessel

Moloch wants at all cost Washington's Bible, which presumably contains crucial magical secrets. He demands it as ransom for the captain's daughter, whom he threatens to kidnap and kill by sunset unless it's handed over. Carne, who has it, resists girlish pressure to switch into modern 'camouflage' dress. Having learned from the late sheriff's archive that Abbie's sister was possessed by a body-hopping demon, Ichabod foresees that the captain's family hiding in a safe house is futile and takes cunning precautions. Indeed, the demon possesses cop after cop, for some fatally, to get hold of the girl.

The Indispensable Man

Examining George Washington's Bible and its invisible ink messages, Ichabod works out that the general must have written those four days after his death and taken crucial secrets in the supernatural war to his unknown grave. Pondering any oddities in the light of his independence war experiences and freemasonry traditions and invoking the sin-eater's help, Crane manages to locate and enter the tomb. Inside, he saves his party from its boogie traps and deputy Andy Brooks's demonic form under Moloch's imperfect control to collect the secret writings.

Instead of triumphing over evil, they find themselves trapped in vines and Moloch's plan, as the demon had an undercover agent they never suspected: Jeremy, who survived buried alive for centuries and switched loyalty to his demonic savior's hell side in human, yet supernatural guise, out on convoluted, apocalyptic vengeance.
