Pirates run rampant in the wider galaxy, but the inhabitants of At Attin lead a quiet life on their tranquil world. Young Wim and his best friend Neel attend school, but Wim daydreams of adventure and helping people just like the Jedi of his favorite stories. Meanwhile, other students like Fern and KB spend their free time working on a hoverbike with aspirations of racing. When Wim oversleeps on the day of the big career assessment test, he takes a shortcut and stumbles upon what he believes to be a buried Jedi temple. Far more interesting than his studies, Wim and Neel return to the site to dig, but find Fern and KB are also invested in uncovering the mystery. Soon, the four kids are launched on an adventure beyond their wildest dreams.

Way, Way Out Past the Barrier

Aboard the recently-uncovered starship Onyx Cinder, Wim, Fern, KB, and Neel are lost. SM-33, a loyal droid in search of his crew, swears allegiance to his new captain, Fern. But he's unable to follow her orders to fly them back home to At Attin because he doesn't know how to get there. Instead, SM-33 docks at Starport Borgo, a seedy pirate port, and sends the four kids out in search of directions. Separated in the bustling bazaar, Wim's lunch money attracts the attention of several treasure-seeking travelers, sparking an all-out brawl and landing the foursome in the brig on the orders of Captain Brutus. However, in lockup they find an unlikely ally: fellow prisoner Jod, who offers his assistance.

Back on At Attin, Wendle, Fara, and the rest of the worried parents meet with a security droid about their missing children. Meanwhile, at Starport Borgo, Wim, Fern, KB, and Neel are free from the brig thanks to their new friend, Jod. In a daring escape, Jod reclaims SM-33, and the crew narrowly makes the jump to hyperspace, leaving several angry pirates in their wake. On an observatory moon, Jod's old friend, Kh'ymm, helps the children uncover the secrets of their home world, and track down clues to get them back safely. But her work is interrupted by the arrival of the New Republic, and Jod and the young travelers must work together to hold off the X-wings and make the jump to Kh'ymm's coordinates, their only hope of getting home.
