In this Christmas special, Britain is in the grips of the 'Big Freeze' - the worst winter on record. Sister Boniface and her fellow travelers are stranded in a train after a frozen coupling snaps, leaving the last carriages stranded in snow. When The Star of the Orient, a precious jewel, is stolen from its safe and a passenger is discovered murdered, Sister Boniface must use her exceptional detection skills to decide who among the suspects is responsible. But with little signs of rescue and a failing generator, passengers must also contend with a more pressing issue - freezing to death.

Sam, Boniface and Felix rush to the estate of author Lincoln Leigh Vasey on a false alarm, only to discover he hosts screen tests for the lead his latest production in the faltering Bond-like franchise of Agent Jonas Best. Three actors are testing: nosy reporter Ruth Penny's new boyfriend Kingsley Markham, classically trained Campbell Boyd and non actor Benson Boyd. The latter is murdered by a deadly scorpion that Vasey kept in the house. Sam, sister Boniface and Ruth discover Boyd had been blackmailing the three men and that actress Phoebe Vilante, the film's femme fatale, was pregnant by him. The presence of Ruth and her boyfriend distracts her ex Sam while Sister Boniface's tests on various items and press cuttings dismiss personal motives, uncovering a Russian spy.

The inaugural convention of the canceled BBC science fiction show Professor Y comes to Great Slaughter, hoping to have the show recommissioned. Organized by obsessed fan club president Roger Crabtree, Barbara Pierce who has invested her inheritance and fan Sister Peter, it stars lead actor Kirk Fabricant, actress Celeste Carmichael and even more blase script writer Douglas Wiseman, who is particularly loathsome to the fans and is more interested in promoting his new show starring Celeste Carmichael. When a pool of blood and a mysterious green liquid is found in Wiseman's hotel room, Sam and Felix interview everyone while Sister Boniface looks for forensic clues that lead to a number of suspects and their troubled lives. Newspaper reporter Norman Whalley still smitten with Peggy, desperately hopes for the scoop to save is job. Professor Y's performer and his major enemy the metallic Zybok go missing adding to the mystery.

The series finale of the TV competition "Glory Be" for chorister of the Year is held at St Vincent's convent, with sister Peter succeeding as nuns choir director to the sick mother superior, sounding even worse, and tempted by modern profane repertoire. The generally disliked musical director Donald Merriweather, a narcissistic bully, is poisoned by cyanide at the keyboard during rehearsals. Sam, Boniface and Felix investigate. A search of Merriweather bridal suite with an adjoining door reveals his abusive affair to finalist Sylvia Melbury. Four others, presenter Barry Gold, director Marion Kane and rival chorister Oliver Potts also have a motive. Sister Boniface finds how the poison was administered using the clues of French beeswax, threatening letters and a partly destroyed cassette tape and sadly arrest the culprit during the final.

It's Just Not Cricket

The Great Slaughter Cricket Club, chaired by Chief Constable Lowsley, is near broke due to embezzlement of funds, even to pay rent of rent to leaseholder Valerie Vandermeer, who can redevelop the land if they default again. The survival of the club depends on the prize from the next match. Their star player Humphrey Lash is murdered with a cricket bat overnight, suspicion falling on the key holders to the cricket club: player Andrew Fitch, who hopes to be discovered by cricket scouts, coach Lindsay Calder-Marshall and his daughter Elsie, who had a secret affair with Lash. Sister Boniface's forensic evidence includes a scrap of paper found in the victims hand, while Sam looks at a magazine with a page torn out. Together they discover Lash was the embezzler, and who killed him for a personal motive.

Church cleaner Beryl Salt, who , dies from a poisoned drink after Felix and Victoria's wedding rehearsal. Sister Boniface determines Salt only died from the weed killer because she had a heart condition. It dawns that bride Victoria was the intended victim. Sister Boniface and Sam also find what is ultimately identified as Bermudan beach sea glass, coated with a slimy substance, pointing them to investigate the guests from Bermuda. Each guest turns out to have a reason to oppose or at least delay the wedding - Victoria's mother Morgana who aspired a local groom, Victoria's brother Gabriel who is wrecking the family firm, Felix's father Jacob Livingstone, and Victoria's best friend and fellow nurse back in Bermuda, Lily Albright, bridesmaid with Peggy. After the culprit is arrested, Felix and Victoria must consider their feelings for each other as their ambitions in Grand Slaughter viz. London are incompatible.
