Episode 1

During Great Slaughter's annual folklore festival, the straw figure to decapitate turns out the fresh corpse of Grace Pearson, the foreign maid of the now adult Bellamy orphans, who recently inherited the estate and fortune of their grim uncle Halcroft Bellamy, which now also is found poison murder. Senior heir Edwin Bellamy tries to cover for his indebted gambler brother Fabian and feminist revel sister Electra, who abused a straw 'mummer' costume to secretly attend the festival cross-dressed and made educating Grace her project, which went out of control. Inspector Sam Gillespie and his forensic nun 'scientific police consultant' Sister Boniface must tread carefully, as the county commissioner personally attended Halcroft's fatal last meal, and get dubious, accidental reinforcement from cocky young Bermuda detective Felix Livingstone, who was meant to learn modern police techniques at Scotland Yard, but now gets stuck with Sam's grim landlady, widow Clam.

While detective Sam Gillespie is otherwise engaged, a prop gun at St Vincent's Convent, where an episode is shot for MI 5 spy series Operation Q.T., has been replaced by a real, loaded one. the bullet was aimed at lead actor Hugo Steele, but as scripted he jumped out of the way. Boniface and useless Livingstone find the bullet in wood paneling and realized it probably was aimed at director Ray Crawford or producer Dick Lansky, but everyone known to have a grudge against either seems to have an alibi, except the cast and crew. Mother superior's objections against filming are overruled by canonness Basil, who backs up super-fan Peter, who even gets an extra part. Gillespie takes over after Lansky is fatally electrocuted, working out while motives are discovered that the killer is mirroring script killings, the finale being a bomb scene.

Several single ladies, mainly widows, are fatally poisoned during dates with a pipe-smoking gentleman, who leaves behind a piece of a jigsaw puzzle and smears cold cream on the corpse faces. Gillespie accepts his grumpy landlady Mrs. Clam, who wants justice for a victim friend, to go undercover as the only thing is common is a dating forum at the local amateur theatre, where director Ida Sweet rules absolutely, assisted by son Colin, whose father deserted them. However none of the serial dating gentlemen actually ticks all boxes after Boniface checks the clues.

Sister Reginald's ex-con brother Alfie abruptly shows up at the convent after being released from jail. With nowhere to go, the sisters agree to let him stay. But when a well-known artist is found murdered, Alfie begins to look like the prime suspect.

In the mansion home of minister of defense, Charles Stratham, party guest Mary Sparkes was found dead at the bottom of a staircase. Quickly assessing Sparkes was murdered by poisoning, Gillespie and DS Livingstone must work out how and identify the murderer among the guests, including reporter Ruth Penny, disguised as a maid and looking for a scoop, who turns undercover. Other people in attendance include Stratham's wife Nancy, lush film actress Jocelyn Kelly, her husband, screenwriter Anthony Kelly and the ministry of defense's chief scientific advisor, professor Azim Thomas, whose secretary Sparkes was. Sister Boniface discovers a sophisticated binary poison was used in both exclusive perfume and cigarettes, while Ruth uncovers an affair between Stratham and Sparkes. A missing secret document concerning Britain's next generation of nuclear missiles points to KGB involvement, so Sam hopes to solve the case before MI5 takes over.

Reggie Wallis, lead singer for the celebrity pop group The Queenmakers, died in his dressing room for a Great Slaughter performance -hence canceled- from an allergic reaction to a bee sting, which Sister Boniface proves murder by finding the dead bee and Wallis' shirt collar smeared with glue and pollen. Gillespie and Livingstone investigate the rivalries among the band, their conniving manager and Wallis' pregnant, secret wife, whom he planned to divorce. Ruth Penny finds an early roadie had committed suicide exactly two years earlier. The testament favors the band mate who actually wrote most songs but was never credited. Pollen combinations found on the dead bee lead to the manor garden the bee had come from. WPC Peggy Button, who had a crush on Wallis, finds her police career jeopardized.

A skeleton is dug up by Brutus the dog during the Great Slaughter Allotment Society's Annual Giant Marrow Contest. Initially believed to be Viking in origin, Sister Boniface determines the bones to be far more recent and belonging to a victim of murder.

Celebrity chef, Prunella Gladwell, comes to St Vincent's Convent to record an episode of her TV cooking competition, Queen of the Kitchen, with members of the Great Slaughter Women's Institute. When one of the contestants dies, it's up to Sister Boniface, Detective Gillespie and Sergeant Livingstone to find the killer.

Mayor Karl Fischer of Bavarian twinning town GroB Gemetzel leads its delegation to Great Slaughter, where a hostile committee lost the municipal council vote by one against a joint war memorial ceremony. The German mayor, his wife Elsa and German soldiers led by general Udo Von Stark, who flirts with the lady constable Peggy Button, arriving for the unveiling of a monument, revives war memories. A sabotage meant for Fischer kills town employee Ellis Everett, who was opposed to the twinning. Boniface contributes forensics, notably on a type of paint and indications the killer must be diabetic, while inspector Gillespie concentrates on motives, both concerning business interests, like cuckoo clock sales, and war frustrations, stretching from Coventry bombing victims -which still give decorated veteran pilot Fischer nightmares- to the nearby POW camp where Fischer found and left love for heiress Elsa, the key to his fortune. Sam and Karl still achieve a pacification against the specter of war in Europe.

Episode 10

The United Britain beauty contest comes to Slaughter Abbey, where one of the three favorites is found dead in the swimming pool. Sister Boniface deduces murder from a blow to the back of the head. Sam is instructed to cooperate formally with Scotland Yard's reputed Detective Chief Inspector Winner, who is sent from London to oversee the investigation, but make sure he doesn't crack the case, while Felix hopes finally to transfer to Scotland Yard. The victim was disliked by her fellow contestants, whom she tried to have disqualified for breaking contest rules. The murder weapon was a stiletto heel. Organizer Lesley Canon is suspected of illicit relationships, possibly blackmailed as such revelation would wreck his career. DCI Winner has Felix arrest Miss Glasgow, who won her title by default when the winner was disqualified, after her sash is found near the pool with the victim's blood on it, even though it was not there when WPC Peggy Button searched the area. Sam and Sister Boniface look for the owner of the stiletto, and a burnt birthday card confirms a motive for murder, rooted in a dark personal scandal.
