Episode 1

When Franz presides over the German League, Bismarck arrives late with a great Dane, a statue of the emperor it urinated on and the claim that his Prussian king should take over the presidency. Franz feels that's a casus belli, but realizes he can't win a war, whoever starts it, without a much stronger army, which costs an obscene fortune. He intends to get a loan for it from Napoleon III, who would cease to be an enemy to safeguard his 'investment'. To that end, the imperial couple travels to Biarritz, where he feels humiliated, but Andrassy suggests Sisi can win over the empress by showing trust by a personal request for a love nest. Körtek nearly backfires, but the loan is awarded, yet Napoleon convinces Franz that Andrassy must be in league with Bismarck. Sisi must again interrupt their bliss since the birth of their heir to find out in Hungary if that country remains loyal.

Franz learns that Prussia is arming itself for a war and Bismarck is getting the German allies, even Sisi's native Bavaria's king Ludwig refuses passage to Austrian troops. While buying army himself, Franz follows Marie's advice to choose simple models which fresh recruits, as will be needed, can handle, after nearly returning Marie to the nuns orphanage for intruding the crown prince's nursery and setting fire to an imperial bed, but also reporting bad child care from staff. Sisi visits count Andrassy's Hungarian home estate, where he confirms that Bismarck asked his defection, while German army are secretly delivered. Hearing about failed harvests spelling famine, she successfully petitions Franz for a generous grant and helps with a wounded stallion causing havoc.

Körtek intends to kidnap Sisi; in joint captivity with Count Andrassy, Sisi is faced with the question of how long she can remain steadfast; Franz is confronted not only with his father-in-law, but also with Sisi's sister.

Sisi and Andrassy travel to Vienna to convince Franz of the need for a Hungarian parliament; Sisi tries to clear her head; the special affection between Sisi and Andrassy does not go unnoticed by Franz; Franz falls back into old patterns.

Although ill-prepared, Franz Joseph starts he war against Bismarck's stronger coalition. Knowing Ödön Körtek's Hungarian rebels plan to join the Prussian side, Sisis motivates count Andrassy, whom the emperor insulted again, and his sister Emanuelle to convince their men to opt for imperial promises towards autonomy, rather then by crossed by Bismarck on top of high treason, so they save the day on the battle field. Sisi, formally left as regent in Vienna, must cope with major logistic shortness and an outbreak of cholera, but finds the English water checks vital. Hvaing committed adultery with wounded Andrassy, who then returns to the war, she takes her mother Ludovika and sister Nene -no longer jealous, seeing he sacrifices- to Bismarck, fails to bluff with French support but wins some goodwill with a cholera plan. Marie, blaming Sisi for her mother's fate, escapes, cross-dressing and hidden in a crate, to the front.

Episode 6

Gutted by his military defeat at Prussian hands, despite best efforts on the front, the emperor is missing for days before sneaking back into Vienna, pushing everyone away near suicidal mood, fearing his empire is doomed. Sisi is mandated to elaborate a deal with the Hungarian landtag (parliamentary estates), basically granting the old realm full internal autonomy under the Habsburg crown. She stays - and resumes her adultery with count Andrassy, who managed to get the Hungarian throne offered to Franz Jozeph, if only the indispensable St. Stephen's crown can be retrieved. Only vindictive rebel leader Ödön Körtek knows where it is, and sadistically sets his price at a kiss while on his cholera death bed. Franz learns about it after promising Napoleon debt service and humiliatingly delivering Austria's resignation from the German League in person, then rushes to her sick bed. She recovers and they vow to make up for the kids' sake, symbolize by their joint coronation.
