In the season long competitions, home bakers, separated into groups, compete against the others within their group in a baking competition. They have two hours to prepare a bakery item only needing to present a total of three of those finished items, one to each judge who will mark it on three criteria, the last being the most important: presentation, creativity, and taste. The winner in each of the preliminary rounds is brought back for the finale, the finalists who go into that final bake being judged on one further criteria, namely compatibility of the baked good with Silos Bakery. The winner of the finale will have that finale bakery item featured among Silos' seasonal menu and go home with a substantial cash prize.

In meeting the five home bakers, Joanna, Becki and Andrew learn not only what they will be baking, but learn the personal stories behind their creations. One going gluten-free may either be an obstacle, or a benefit in standing out from the crowd. Two of the bakers make something remarkably similar to each other which may lead to some last minute alterations to their recipe to stand out from the other. And two face some challenges in baking in the warm outside environment as opposed to the comfort of their own home kitchen. Joanna admits that conceptually there is an element from each other five recipes which are among her favorite things to eat, so it may come down to execution for all three judges.
