In this prequel to the series, old-fashioned gentleman Oliver O'Toole's well-oiled team for lost letters is accidentally joined by ambitious Internet age postal Shane McInerney. They bond over the tragic case of a couple in the making. A year ago, charming law firm office boy Charlie quit his demeaning dogsbody job after falling in love at first sight with Kelly. She accepted to spend a perfect day with him, yet refused to meet again. As the team traces the couple's year since, tragedy is found for both, yet they hope to help them get together, or at least prevent suffering a tragic injustice.

Oliver is delighted that his team's new postal office supervisor is his late grandfather's famous former colleague, Theresa Capodiamonte. She can see his own excellence when they receive a cryptic letter from nine year-old Owen. The spelling and message didn't allow regular delivery, but Oliver's team works out it's to a rest home, presumably to his granny. They find her, but she denies and refuses the letter. Oliver realizes that's a ruse to protect the rascal, who in fact is Casey, key witness against a drug lord, in witness protection with his family, but doing a fugue to celebrate granny's birthday, and the presence of an undercover fiend.

While high-flyer Oliver and his team wonder about his annual assessment, for the first time by the legendary supervisor, she finally gets a shot at her other dream, acting. Oliver realizes that a four year old letter, too badly battered to be delivered, containing a non-stamped one inside, has enough clues to be handed to the military post at a fort, as it's destined to a former Afghanistan fighter, nick-named Buzz. Captain Hopper clearly doesn't give such letters due attention, so the team finishes the case, working with the author, Afghan Samila, to find her savior trough his mother and pastor.

The postables gain a new Supervisor Cora Brandt who implements stricter policies and procedures as they try to track down clues that leads them to a ranch to deliver a love letter that can potentially change lives. However, as Oliver and Shane (Kristin Booth) grow closer to unfolding their latest mail mystery, things heat up between the two on the dance floor. Meanwhile, Rita is inspired to pursue her love of writing, penning a new novel that Cora becomes captivated by.

Rita's thick novel arouses interest, but to her horror the autobiographic elements are obvious to all except Norman, the obviously object of her affection. Oliver surprises dancing partner Shane by ending the course at the dance school, which has been won in a bet by Ramon Rodriguez.

Thus Olivers' team must handle to identical letters to her daughters Caitlyn and (Va)Nessa, who are for years estranged from her and each-other. Meanwhile Shane's indiscreet attempt to prove that Oliver's wife Holly is living with another man in Paris infuriates him.

Shane devises a fashionable make-over, especially as the office's new supervisor will stop at nothing to favor her daughter, but Rita prefers authenticity, to Oliver's satisfaction.

Oliver's team must work out the meaning of a demo tape, working only with the addressee, who ignores why it was never delivered. They reconstruct it was recorded by promising singer-songwriter Billy James, who disappeared from the business and never was discovered. It turns out a car accident resulted in lasting amnesia, ignoring his former talent and ambition, and the romantic edge of his job as recording studio technician.

Oliver's team is divided how to handle a lost letter written by Melissa on what proved her hospital death bed to husband Michael Wheeler, the assistant district attorney and aspiring politician, who left her after finding out his blood type proves he can't be 'their' daughter Abby's father's. The letter claims she had been raped and scared into silence just before their wedding. Michael has never remarried and raised Abby alone, she now helps run his political campaign. The alleged father is serving a life sentence for another rape, and is the only possible kidney donor to save Abby's life. Valerie Bertinelli continues her role as Rebecca Starkwell, from the USPS in Washington, D.C. and a good friend of Shane's.

Norman's puzzle talent unlocks a 'Chinese' treasure box. It contains an incomplete series of love letters between a separated couple whose true love seemingly failed to cheat terminal illness. While investigating, Oliver and Shane get locked into a bank safe locker-room with the first-day day interim clerk, young father Jason, whose rascal son Ryan triggered his robbery alarm. Guessing they're in trouble, Norman drags Rita along to come to their rescue, while the jury decides whether she won an all Colorado postal misses competition hosted by dance instructor Ramon Rodriguez.

Oliver's team handles a letter, apparently never committed to the US Post, from a woman to a pastor whom she hopes will give her baby son Joshua the necessary care she couldn't give. It turns out Joshua is now a respectable surgeon who refuses to meet his unworthy mother, but the team soon realizes he also has a fine brother. The case inspires Norman to finally respond to a notification from the national adoption registry that his natural family seeks contact, as turns out a pleasantly wacky maternal grandmother Ardis Paine. Her weak health works out fortunate for the postal case's family.
