The South Essex is to be disbanded due to dwindling personnel. This doesn't make sense as the entire 2nd Battalion is in England and accepting new recruits. Sharpe and Harper head to England to work out what is going on and save the regiment. They may need to take drastic measures in the course of their investigations.

Wellington is about to invade France and is considering his options. A French anti-Napoleon aristocrat indicates that the people of his area might rise up against Napoleon if the British made a show of force in the district. Wellington sends Sharpe's regiment and some riflemen to take the aristocrat's castle, now occupied by the French. The unit is to be led by a very inexperienced Colonel whose lack of competence in military matters is soon obvious.

Sharpe's Mission

Wellington sends a force to blow up a fort containing General Calvet's ammunition and supplies. Leading to the unit is Colonel Brand, an officer who Sharpe has served under before and looks up to. Also in the party is a disfigured major who is an explosive expert and Major General Ross who sees this as an intelligence-gathering opportunity. Little do they know that it is a trap to capture General Ross and that Colonel Brand is working for the French.
