Joe thoroughly prepares his first valentine's date with Amanda, but despite finding a perfect gift the Hobbs men curse seems to strike him too, despite fielding Kevin with super glue, which alas proves a testing complication for all present. David is resigned to his gift failure fate until 'gift king' Marcus gets him to hide the necklace for Alicia, which Amy accidentally finds and assumes to be for her, leaving the men to battle for it all the way to the restaurant.

Finding all storage at home utterly cluttered, David decides to dump most of the family's 'hidden treasures', mostly discarded junk someone wants to keep. He's eager to reuse the space for his and especially Kevin's dream: a See Dad Run memorabilia 'experiece museum'. However, the kin tries everything to hide and save some of their stuff, and part of the show memorabilia is accidentally dumped and acquired by wheelchair-ridden super-fan Calvin Riggins, whom Kevin had to expel from the Hobbs fan-club. Meanwhile Joe gets frustrated as he can't impress Charlotte who seems better at everything he tries.

Joe wants to become a detective, so Kevin organizes mystery games for him at home. Alas, the case of Jnaie's cuddly bear, which David accidentally ran over and hides hoping Kevin can get it cleaned and fixed, rests on a trail of bananas, which Joe logically ignores as irrelevant trash. Emily wan(t wait to learn driving, but Amy became a terrible example herself and overprotective David's constant alerts make her too jumpy, so Marcus is recruited as instructor.

The Hobbs parents are looking forward to a night out together, so Joe finally gets to babysit -and boss around- unwilling Janie, but has to call the police as they are scared by a sinister figure outside- actually just 'safety spy' Kevin. recently licensed driver Emily was denied riding at night to a party, especially after meanly 'uncovering' backseat spy Kevin, but sneaks out with depressed party animal friend Robbie.

David naively joins Joe's scouts troop but soon realizes neither is ready for the boy to earn a merit badge from serious leader Burwick. So Kevin mobilizes props man Guy to fake every test for them. It still proves too hard and dangerous for David, but Joe saves the day for real. Back home, the girls enjoy a shopping spree, but Emily tries to hide she got Janie's ears pierced without Almy and overcompensates, only to land in truth time.

Joe is exceptionally inspire to enter the school's speech competition by class teacher Mumbrue, who is a big David fan. When he drops by and unexpectedly brings his years-labored script, David dares not tell him it's hopeless, but overdoes it. Mumbrue decides to quit his boring job, too rudely to take back, and try full-time script writing. David must now deliver his promise to help and get Joe' teacher back, so he gets Kevin to play a producer and turn him down, but that goes pear-shaped in two tiers. Now David must inspire Joe. Meanwhile Emily panics when her all-attention-consuming cell-phone goes missing, actually hidden by jealous brat Janie.

When Joe admires neighbor Bob the Builder's cool new tree-house, David jealously decides to build their own. But Joe's enthusiasm dies down as he's not allowed to actually help while David bumbles utterly, even the stage replica Kevin gets done by a crew is a bummer, while Joe is drawn to Bob's further elaborate improvements and learns about carpentry, until the Hobbs family works out what counts for more. Amy arranges a dogsbody job for Emily in wardrobe at her soap's studio, but she and a fellow daughter mess up, having more eyes for handsome shirtless actors then the dresses they must care for, yet try to cover up by doctoring with the script.

Joe moves to high-school and duly doubts Emily's endless social advise, yet seems in need of help after making forbidden eye-contact with intimidating senior Greg Howard, who however has his own priorities. David hoped to regain time for gold as Janie finally goes to kindergarten, but when she wines being forbidden to sit next to buddy Charlotte, foolishly volunteers as 'class mam'. That turns out a grueling full-time job he's not fit for despite appealing to Kevin and Marcus and can't quit from, until he turns a baking disaster into a food-fight triumph.

Joe and his mates prepare a great air rock act for the school's talent hunt. Emily shocks the family by planning to 'suspend' school after David somewhat naively got her an internship at a TV news show trough bitching director Brooke, which she takes to liker a duck to water as the fixer for star news reader Chance Stone. David now asks Brooke to make it tough, and arranges to get her to the talent hunt, where her mates prepare their best-ever silhouettes act thanks to masterly coaching from Kevin and Marcus.

Joe was resigned to 'cool' senior Emily pretending not to know him at school, but enjoys milking her sudden interest when his big brother program mentor turns out to be hot Carson, to her liking but less interested then Joe suggests. The Hobbs parents trust the 'our home, our rules' threat to make their kids heal, but shamelessly-selfish mini-tyrant Janie just has to cross the road and be spoiled even worse by Marcus and his wife, so David and Amy just keep offering bigger carrots.

Joe is reluctant to get a Spanish tutor, until he meets Tracey McFee and decides the fox worth wriggling into his tight jeans for. Alas, she's worthless at Spanish and the viciously aggressive actress that David had fired from his show before it became a hit. Not daring to confront her and disappoint Joe by firing her, David gets her a part on Amy's soap. She still stinks and stops at nothing to exact insane demands by tantrums, even endangering lead start Santiago.

David sees Joe and his sissy mates admire TV wrestling and shows them some of his Mane-iac video moves, even takes them to his professional TV coach, but bragging gets him to accept a challenge from Dr. Mayhem, not realizing that maniac takes no prisoners, but it's too late to bow out just now cool boy Dylan joins Joe's gang. Emily's dubious dance mobbing is inappropriately copied by 'admiring' brat Janie in class.

David's nightmare kin arrives: his father in law, the retired major, is staying for three days. So he's stoked when PA Kevin confesses he failed to get his boss out of jury duty: anything beats Sir's belittling. For the kids 'softie-mismanaged' kids he actually plans a boot-camp to toughen up, which Joe bravely tries to survive. Emily pretends to spend all her time on homework instead, but bragging ropes her in later. Amy is just frustrated her pa doesn't seem to notice her acting career at all, while David overdoes his star part when elected jury foreman until he's thrown out. Hearing the major finally commends his civic commitment, he gets Kevin to stage a fake court so he can still stage a heroic sentence reading, which does not go according to script, nor the results.

Joe's mates can't partake in the gaming tournament they trained for months, so he desperately recruits Marcus, who proves hopelessly inept, and Kevin, who can't get over a previous game trauma. Amy fears she'll be written out of her soap if anyone antagonizes the bully studio boss, but David runs into him at the sports shop, which rekindles a golf club feud, and talks himself into volunteering bribed Emily as his daughter's competitor in the local pageant, which she actually accepts to run in order to play a feminist charade and dissuade Janie, yet motivations get twisted.

David fears his kids are becoming quitters, so should give the good example. He hoped Joe would get the message but fail to finish a complex miniature puzzle, loosing the bet, so panics as his son triumphs and expects to see the wager-loser jump from a plane. It's truth time aboard, with both girls clinging to their cuddly toy comfort animals: Janie trying to give it up like classmates, Emily shamelessly having retrieved her when told it was actually stored in the attic, again ignoring her live friends.

Due to Janie's school grandparents day, David and Amy are horrified to have to invite both his haughty ma and her domineering pa the major, who hate each-other. When they arrive, elaborate efforts to prevent them meeting fail, so the open fighting starts and Joe believes his Cghinese-knowledgeable grandpa must be a spy. After David expels both 'till you learn to get along', he and Amy are abhorred to find them kissing. Unwilling to take them to school, David goes in the major's attire with Emily roped in as her grandmother, both unable to dance like her, so they fall trough and the real ones arrive.

Joe is excited to attend a Scifi convention dressed as his hero, but bugged by his chaperoning ma's eternal fuzzing which makes them be late time and again, yet her over-stuffed purse comes in handy when he gets stuck in the elevator with the real Time Lord and clueless Marcus. Against better knowledge, David follows female advice to boost Janie's confidence with some gifts for a school trip, but Charlotte convinces her it's 'proof' she'll be sent on an overseas exchange program unless she earns her keeps with model behavior and chores. Worried by her attitude, David consults psychotherapist Dr. Lugner, who considers clingy PA Kevin's trauma worse.

After rushing makes David run over Joe's science project and Emuily's foot, he fears becoming a home dad just made life worse for him and his family. While exhausted desperate David re-watches series episodes, his guardian angel character drags him into an alternate reality where he remained the ever-absent TV star, promoting Kevin to studio boss with his own slavish PA. Joe is happy with the family's new nanny, David's ex-rival ted McGinly, whom he even calls dad, while Amy got addicted to plastic surgery and Emily as clingy as insecure, desperate for paternal attention. When David wants to return and fix their lives, that's not in the angel's gift: he must earn it.

David finally accepted to star in a cop detective action movie, so the whole family follows him to the New York set, where they prove the crew's nightmare, wrecking nearly every scene, while Marcus's attempts to come up with a smashing ending are cheap and unfit ripoffs. Emily swoons for already desperately insecure hunky co-star Nick, Joe pigs out a the catering, every Kevin's attempt to film a making-off runs wild. After they accidentally ruin the expensive stunt scene, Amy takes the kids home, but dropping by at a bank they are taken hostage by clowns, who turn out Hobbs fans when David and Nick really rush to the rescue, still in police detective attire.
