Joe turned to his dad, desperate to get rid of clingy, bossy lab partner Amanda Sullivan, who keeps 'playfully' punching him black and blue. David reneges on their plan to pretend other engagements when he finds Amanda's father is non other then his hero, golf champion Scooter Sullmivan. So Joe gets dragged along on plat dates and to the golf course. Ultimately, both Hobbs boys work up the courage to come clean, with surprising results.

David is determined to treat Amy, who's exhausted from soap acting, to a family beach holiday. While a fan flight attendant upgrades her to first class to be spoiled, David has a hard time overruling Emily who prefers some popular friends 'party of the year', yet fails to sabotage leaving, while Kevin prepares everything but has fear of flying. Alas, at the airport David is countered down to his boxers by an ail-wiled customs officer who suffers his awn daughter's impudence, only to be surprised like him as Emily shows a family side with twisting results.

For three days, the kid hero enjoys celebrity life, missing the perks when attention switches three days later to the next accidental hero. To prove to Joe life as a non-celebrity can also be cool, he masquerades as nobody salesman and takes him to the baseball stadium. There they get into trouble with a butch security agent, having spotted what Emily bribed Janie to keep quiet: she's dating David's rival Ted McGinley's son Xander.

Kevin was supposed to make it all happen, but has a distracting wild crush on waitress Chelsea and lack of self-confidence gets him trapped in posing as an Aussie vet. Plans falling trough, hopes are focused on Aussie actor Tom McClain alias action movie hero Melbourne Max and his Capuchin monkey, for whom Amy viz. Janie swoon.

Now the Hobbs family must stand a week long the company of Ted's deliberately pushing their buttons, which proves miserable, even scary for Joe while Emily meanly exploits Xander McGinley's crush on her. Unprecedented, the fathers must settle it in a duel. Meanwhile Kevin can't help, being locked in David's soundproof basement recording studio with Marcus, so he passes the time imitating his idol.

Marcus gets to direct a commercial, with Kevin as overzealous but competent assistant, and chooses Janie to star. David insists she must do a real audition, assuming that's a formality for him. Yet the client picks the brat and considers her real father 'not convincing for lack of chemistry', picking instead David's former show extra Mr. Perino, who now gets to play the haughty star over 'cast parent' Hobbs, whose patience is ultimately rewarded. Joe is not amused his friends consider ma Amy super-sexy after seeing her in a tacky old bikini SF movie, so they use inverse make-up magic. Laughed away for utter predictability a school senior, Emily resolves to prove herself bold, but seems destined to turn out ridiculous, whether her pranks are lame or embarrassing failures, redeemed only by talking her way out of the worst disaster.

David cautiously used excuses, being chicken-dared to the irreverent talk-show of impish Whitney Gibbons, but even his kids being fans, promises even sickness can't stop him. Just then the kids -who fear dad will divulge their most embarrassing accidents- and Amy get Canadian moose flu, so he finds a quarantine-like method to nurse hem without being infected and decides against Kevin's grandpa's dubious paralyzing remedy. Whitney drops by to check if he'll come and gets it from the kids, so she falls sick during the show, which David takes over his way, utterly unprepared and having decided against mortifying his offspring.

David takes pity on Emily who is bugged by the cheerleaders captain as one of the girls without a prom date, so he dens her flowers. As he failed to instruct a note to Kevin, she assumes her secret admirer will actually turn up. Not daring to owe up, David has Kevin organize an audition for the part, surprised she actually appreciates this ploy. However the only boy passing his 'sneeze test' is too enthusiastic, hence dumped last moment, requiring Kevin to step in and fall trough.

David loves Halloween costumes, pranks and candy raids, but even Joe has outgrown trick or treating with dad. So he gets Kevin to organize an elaborate ghost prank with a studio crew, which professionally freaks out family and friends. Shortly after, the ghost seems to come go love at the Hobbs home, part of a complex prank war.

David realizes that Marcus hangs around constantly because he actually misses his fat, troublesome wife. David realizes Janie has absolutely no talent for ballet, yet lacks the courage to take her out of the class and fails to discourage her by seeing real ballet. Then he champions her right to try, and despite insulting fellow parents goes the extra mile to prevent her klutziness getting the recital canceled. Kevin dutifully hid an old VHS video from David's childhood as ordered, but it's found handy to be used now before its overdue destruction.

So David gets Kevin with a crew to stage a heroic version, but doting son Joe has his own views and method. David's buddy Marcus is quickly exhausted when his wife, previously fat lazy Alicia, returns from a European holiday slim and energetic, meaning he must 'earn' a revitalized sex life with grueling sports efforts, which David and Amy are soon dragged in, till they resort to malingering and excuses, even faking a new TV series.

David plans to expose perks-parasite Fred by private video, but it turns into a roast in front of the entire family, just when Fred's speech is most grateful.
