Secrets of the Dead Season 10 Episodes

4 Episodes 2010 - 2010

Episode 1

Churchill's Deadly Decision

Wed, May 12, 201054 mins

Fearing Hitler would seize the French Navy, Winston Churchill ordered the destruction of France's ships. The new British Prime Minister shocked the world - to demonstrate that Britain would fight the Axis to the death, and alone if necessary. When the French Navy, the world's 4th largest, went under the Nazi puppet Vichy government, it included the world's most powerful submarine. Marshal Pétain's armistice terms put La Royale on the sidelines, and only Rear Admiral Muselier answered De Gaulle's plea to form a Free French Navy. Much of Vichy's fleet sat off Mers-el-Kébir, (French) Algeria. The Royal Navy delivered an ultimatum: join the British war effort or sail away. If the Vichy government refused, they had to scuttle all ships or be fired on. No agreement was reached, so the July 3, 1940 Operation Catapult climaxed when British forces opened fire. The Vichy government did not notify its Mers-el-Kébir commanders of the negotiation's failure, so the French sailors didn't know they were about to be attacked. 1,297 French sailors were killed, but only 2 British. Relations with France suffered, but Churchill felt he must push the U.S. to join the UK against the Reich, Italy, Russia, and soon Japan.
