John Brett works for a middle east oil company in Beirut and has been leaking trade secrets to some opposition countries. Drake is sent to find out how and to whom he has been giving it. Drake reluctantly uses local Lebanese security personnel to install bugging devices in his office and follow the trail of the information. When confronted, Brett says he is following orders of British security service. It turns out he was duped by Edwin Archer, an ex-M9 agent who was dismissed from the service. Things come to a head when Drake confronts Archer in his home but, even then, there are more twists and turns to come.

As Drake digs into the social life of Prague by going to a party being organised by Milos Kaldor, he's drugged and arrested for drunk driving and seriously injuring a pedestrian. It appears Kaldor is in charge of a blackmail ring and has been keeping Desmond as a hostage. Drake has to get him and his family out of Prague before, Desmond's value drops to nil, but there's more to it than it first appears.

Drake takes the place of a defector and goes behind the iron curtain to find out what is happening when foreign agents reach England. When he gets there he finds a replica English village, which is a school where foreign agents are taught to 'be British'. Actual British subjects, such as Drake, are employed to teach the agents the finer points of the British way of life. Drake sets out to disrupt their education and stop the supply of agents from reaching England.

Drake has to work hard to save her and foil the East German's plans.

The local police inspector is very suspicious and makes it difficult for Drake. Things are further complicated when the real Max Wright appears.

Drake's dogged following finally pays off, where it eventually tracks him to an incunabula bookshop owner.

The murdered woman was the mistress of leading general in the revolution who had her murdered.
