Jason exhausts everyone, refusing to adapt the plan, training over and over for a near-impossible liberation of hostages, including three US citizens, one approaching medical emergency, from a pirate vessel in the South Chinese Sea, which isn't even located yet, so it's hush-hush when it's found, dangerously close to Chinese territorial waters.

Jason suggests that Ray and Sonny depart early to act as bodyguards for Ambassador Mardsen, but instead of the lush, Ray requests Clay, who is pouting as his team candidate was dumped in favor of Ray's atypical choice Vic Lopez, so the rookie gets a dubious welcome from various teammates on top of common hazing.

Ray, standing in for Jason and told that's crucial for his promotion case, starts Vic's field training and makes a crucial on the spot decision preventing a disaster with a hostile sharpshooter.

Ensign Davis' conduct is called into question after the bar altercation, when she hit a policeman. Clay warns Sonny he figured out his "girl" was Davis. Sufficiently healed, Jason leads Bravo Team again, deployed in Bangladesh to capture Russian warlord Yevgenny Kostarov. An explosion kills Kostarov and destroys the staircases, complicating escape, as well as getting needed information. The team races home from their deployment, eager to attempt informally helping Ensign Davis as character witnesses before the formal board. Ray follows advise to abstain in order not to compromise his promotion. Clay attends an event with Rebecca and admits to consider extending his career on a bigger stage.

The CIA tracked down a nuclear scientist who may not be allowed to pass on military grade know-how to jihadists in the politically dubious ex-soviet republic of Turkmenistan, where he is held hostage. The Pentagon offered their special forces a joint training exercise there, as cover for Bravo to sneak off base and abduct the asset. The base is however closed for everyone and Turkmen CO Odeev bonds with the team, even agrees to bribed the guard post so they can celebrate the Bravo sendoff in a nightclub, but gradually gets suspicious when too many Yanks keep 'wandering off', in fact Jason heading the one and only chance abduction attempt.

While tensions running high on the home front, Jason protests in vain when captain Lindell forces Sonny to attend six weeks of advanced armory school in his native Texas, as punishment to cool down after his recent bar altercation, and may not deploy with Bravo in Afghanistan. Things get out of hand at Sonny's annual pre-deployment barbecue, where Jason has to pull him in line and order best behavior for once, but is also displeased to hear Clay is considering Lidell's invitation to enter the STA-21 program, to prepare the graduate for a brass career.

Jason is angry when he finds out that 'disloyal' graduate Clay has accepted entering the STA-21 sailor-to-commissioned officer program. Sonny reports to an Air Force base in Texas to serve his disciplinary training action, where he gets reacquainted with childhood friend Hannah, and helps out on overburdened father Emmet's unprofitable ranch, suggesting to sell as he never intended to run it. Still reeling, Jason decides to send ambitious Clay to another base, where he feels Clay's presence will be less of a distraction to the team.

Sonny seriously contemplates leaving Bravo for a Texan instructor job to resume his love with barmaid Hannah Oliver and join the ailing Quinn ranch, but father Emmet realizes he practically chased his son when he lost his wife and pleads against 'losing your second family'.
