And renowned journalist Max Connors returns to Pearl Bay with his wife Elena, who can't comprehend the passionless reunion he has with his family. But before long, Max has uncovered something damaging about Bob's new scheme.

Laura despairs when she fears that neither Rupert nor Miranda has ambitions for once they leave school. Meanwhile, Bob forces Craig into the world of real estate, but while he deals with desperate, penniless tenant, Craig discovers a deep secret about his family; and Max asks Laura to read the beginnings of his novel but is dissatisfied by her response.

An old reporter friend of Max's shows up in Pearl Bay, where he is surprised to learn how committed Max is to the local newspaper; then he invites Laura on a date, which exposes Max's true feelings for her. Miranda turns against her father after he moves in with his mistress, while Rupert finally realizes that his parents will never reunite. Tempers flare in court when Harold's long-estranged wife finds herself in a bitter dispute with her neighbor; and Heather attempts to force Bob to make nice with her recently-found parents, Harold and Meredith, but the process is harder than she expected.

After Max passes out in Laura's bed, she attempts to sneak him out of her home discreetly... only to expose him to the whole town. As she attempts to clear her name, Laura is intrigued by the reactions of the townspeople--particularly of Max himself. Elsewhere, an Indian filmmaker plans a long con on Bob, brings home a family terror for Phrani, and has a powerful impact on Karen, who is rethinking her entire life philosophy after setting a wedding date with Angus.

Law and Order

The Pearl Bay courthouse is officially closed, leading Laura to plot a move back to the big city, despite the protests of her children and ex-husband, and Bob to make the opening gambit in increasing his political profile. The townspeople begin staging mass acts of civil disobedience, with the tacit assistance of Sergeant Grey, in the hopes of keeping the courthouse open. Events come to a head when Meredith, in a fit of rage, storms into the courthouse carrying a shotgun. Although Max defuses the situation, he quickly realizes that they can make the most of it, and he stages a siege to bring attention to the issue of the courthouse. As the siege goes on, Sergeant Grey realizes the limits of his police acumen, Bob must make a choice between his political corruption and the love of his life, and Laura's family attempt to make amends with one another. Inside the courthouse, meanwhile, the "hostages" one by one begin to re-evaluate their futures as they fake a siege, and keep strait-laced Laura - bunkered down in her office - from realizing the counterfeit nature of the crisis.
