Captain Flynn complains on behalf of the enlisted men but the General requires that the men maintain disciplined adherence to all rules. A resentful Flynn suspects that the General is furtively eating better than the underfed men under his command and resents the General's obsession of having his boots shined daily. Later, when Flynn is mustered out and going home he shares a military hop with the General. Enemy fire brings the plane down and Flynn finds himself in a liferaft with the General and another passenger. The only source of water is a canteen which the general keeps tied and hanging off into the sea. When the General denies the thirsty men even a sip in order to conserve it, an indignant Flynn accuses that the General of secretly drinking their meager supply at night while they're asleep.
