The once opulently rich Roses, following news that their now absent business manager has left them financially ruined, are left by the government with only a modest income and one asset, Schitt's Creek.
Episode 2
The Drip

A leak in the motel room ceiling which is allowing brown water to drip on top of his bed is the last straw for Johnny in living in Schitt's Creek. Believing it is at least a start in the road to financial recovery, Johnny decides the next order of business is to sell the town. What Johnny learns is the most pressing of many obstacles in getting at least what he paid for it is that there is a contract which stipulates that the mayor has to sign off on the sale. Knowing the mayor's temperament, Johnny and Moira, and if possible their offspring, have to attend a dinner at the Schitts' home - Roland and his wife Jocelyn - to get on the mayor's good side so that he will sign. Former actress Moira has to oblige an unusual further request by Roland to seal the deal. Meanwhile, Stevie invites both David and Alexis to a tailgate party in town. Alexis happily accepts, she who sees this invitation as the perfect opportunity to one-up Stavros in what she sees as their post-breakup battle.

Don't Worry, It's His Sister

The next obstacle Johnny believes he faces in selling the town is the town sign, which depicts two of Roland's ancestors in what Johnny sees as a compromising position. However, none of the longtime town residents see what Johnny sees, and as such he has difficulty convincing anyone in authority to change the sign. Roland in particular takes offense to Johnny's offense, as Roland sees Johnny's offense as an attack on his family. Johnny has to convince Roland of what he and most out-of-towners would see in the sign. Moira falls into a major depression after seeing the negative results of Googling her name. Nothing that the family does brings her out of her funk, but a request by Jocelyn may do the trick. Jocelyn, however, may regret making the request. David, who still has one active credit card, is forced to look for a job to pay for his recent purchases. An unwitting source may be David's problem in holding onto any job. And Alexis contemplates embarking on a relationship with the stranger she kissed at the tailgate party, not knowing anything about him beyond he having a beard and being attracted to him physically. He may have some say in the matter.

Bad Parents

Because David has no place to store all his designer clothes after his father demands David remove them from his and his mother's closet, David has to figure out what to do with them. Stevie suggest he sell what he doesn't want, which is not that easy to do in Schitt's Creek and with David's mentality of "every piece is special". Alexis has to do community service in Schitt's Creek for a DUI charge incurred previous to her arrival. She ends up doing that service with fellow "delinquent" and object of her secret affection, Mutt. Because of these issues, David and Alexis' rather distant attitude toward them, and an issue with Alexis' middle name, Johnny and Moira come to the conclusion that they have been bad parents and don't really know their children all that well. They take a business approach to rectify the matter. And through all these issues, the Roses learn some unexpected information about the Schitt family.
Episode 5
The Cabin

An incident shows the Roses how their small living quarters are negatively affecting their "private" lives. On a request by Johnny to Roland to fix the door to give him and Moira more privacy, Roland's answer is to offer Johnny and Moira his cabin so that they can do what men and women do, without fear of David or Alexis seeing or hearing. Despite the fear of what the Schitts' cabin would be like, Johnny and Moira accept his offer. Johnny and Moira are surprised by the Schitts' cabin in more ways than one. With their parents gone for the night, Alexis and David decide to have a motel room party, deciding on a games night theme. Because of David's exacting standards, he needs the party to have exactly six people, with Stevie, Mutt and Twyla being three of the obvious invitees, leaving one spot left open, that sixth who he has no idea who it could be. Alexis may have different thoughts as to the nature of the party than David.
Episode 6
Wine and Roses

Johnny's latest networking attempt to make money yields a call back only from Herb Ertlinger, the owner of the local business, Herb Ertlinger Fruit Wines. However, Herb's want is not for Johnny's help in distribution as Johnny assumed, but Moira to become the company spokesperson in a series of commercials. Despite detesting the wine itself, Moira agrees as she sees it as being her acting comeback vehicle. Meanwhile, David believes, since he has not been able to sleep since arriving in Schitt's Creek, that he is suffering from some major malady, which is made all the more distressing when he learns there is no hospital in town. What he does learn from the local "doctor" Ted Mullens is that he is having a panic attack, which he and Alexis always believed was something made-up by celebrities. Regardless, David takes measures to overcome his affliction. And Alexis is still doing community service work with Mutt. A couple of subsequent situations allow Alexis to get up close and personal with Mutt, while the same happens for David and an unexpected townsperson.
Episode 7
Turkey Shoot

Following an incident where David is unable to kill an insect in his room, Stevie, as a joke, invites David along on Roland's annual turkey shoot. To prove that he is nothing like Stevie believes him to be, David accepts. The horror that is the day for David can only be relieved by something to take his mind away from it, that something which Moira is able to provide. Because Moira is outwardly stressed, Jocelyn invites her on a girls day out to Janine's, the salon in Elmdale. Moira comes out of that situation even more stressed for a specific reason. Jocelyn may have a better handle on Moira than Moira thought. And Ted, the veterinarian, asks Alexis out on a date. Although she likes Ted in his handsomeness and the fact that he is a "doctor", she thinks Ted's best use is as a prop to make Mutt jealous.

Allez-Vous

Moira is excited when she receives a package from one of her old friends, Justine St. Pierre, believing that this move is the first step in her friends reaching out in support. In reality, it is a starter kit for Justine's pyramid scheme door-to-door sales cosmetics company, Allez-Vous. Despite their abhorrence of being Allez-Vous reps, Moira and David are attracted to the lure of seemingly easy money as advertised through the glossy training video, and decide to be the Allez-Vous reps in Schitt's Creek. Their initial Allez-Vous get together with the women they know in Schitt's Creek ends up being an illuminating experience. Meanwhile, Johnny is trying to make his way to Elmdale, but doesn't want to divulge the reason why: he is applying for employment insurance. He finds trying to get a car to drive himself a difficult enough task, but his already problematic task is compounded by the difficulty in actually getting EI. And Alexis believes Ted is too nice a guy, and wants him to toughen up and be meaner, except to her.
Episode 9
Carl's Funeral

Bob's brother Carl has just passed away. Johnny and Moira barely know Bob and can't remember Carl at all, so they're surprised that Bob wants Johnny to be a pallbearer because Carl admired Johnny. Trying to get out of being a pallbearer, Johnny gets roped into giving the eulogy; not knowing what to say, he transfers thoughts of Carl's death to his own. Among Carl's relatives who come to town for his funeral are his stepdaughter Bree - Stevie's cousin - and her husband Sean. David thinks Bree, Sean, and their friends are trash, even by Schitt's Creek standards, but Stevie being related to this bunch gives David another view of her. The couple and their baby are staying at the motel, so Alexis escapes to Ted's for the duration, but his place might be just as scary to her.
Episode 10
Honeymoon

Following their sexual encounter, David and Stevie don't know how to behave as regular people around each other anymore...whatever "regular" means for them. It doesn't help that mostly everyone in town finds out about them and won't let them forget. Now that they've been dating for 2 weeks, Ted and Alexis host their first party: namely David, Stevie, Mutt, and Twyla. The conversation takes all kinds of uncomfortable directions. Later, Moira and Johnny's warnings to both their offspring against pregnancy by/with podunk locals turns to the fact that Moira and Johnny have no social life in Schitt's Creek. They later find that this is more than their own choice.
Episode 11
Little Sister

Moira's estranged younger sister Dee Dee, whom she hasn't seen in ages, unexpectedly visits, but Moira refuses to reunite with her because she believes her little sister's on-the-surface generosity is a veneer for gloating. Johnny wants Moira to swallow her pride so they can graciously accept whatever monetary gifts Dee Dee offers. Meanwhile, Alexis hears both sides of the story of Mutt and Twyla's relationship; and David and Stevie are still trying to figure out the "benefits" part of their friends-with-benefits relationship and set the boundaries quickly, as Stevie is in the company of hunky handyman Grant; and Jocelyn wants David to counsel her gay student Connor, but he might not have much cogent advice.
Episode 12
Surprise Party

Moira's birthday is fast approaching and Johnny wants to hold a surprise party for her. He initially doesn't get much assistance in organizing the party from either David or Alexis, the latter who doesn't even want to attend as she and Ted were planning on a romantic getaway in Chicago the day of the party since Ted has to attend a convention there anyway. As such, Johnny decides to enlist Roland and Jocelyn's help in the party masquerading as a black tie fundraiser that Jocelyn is organizing. But one problem with the plan arises after another, the most difficult to overcome being Moira, a born events planner, wanting to take control of the event, threatening not to attend if she doesn't get her way. Meanwhile, Stevie is still struggling with dealing with what it means to be friends with David. And Alexis, who is eventually convinced by Ted to stay for the party while he goes to Chicago alone, may see it as her opportunity to get closer to a now single Mutt in a romantic setting.
Episode 13
Town for Sale

Johnny has a buyer for the town in the form of Andy Roberts, a shelving manufacturer, which means that the Roses will have at least enough money to leave town to set up elsewhere. Both David and Alexis start making plans for their life away from Schitt's Creek, one whose plans are somewhat dependent upon the other to succeed. They also resolve their relationships in Schitt's Creek. Alexis' includes with Ted, Mutt and Ronnie, the latter who provides some illuminating information. David's is solely with Stevie to who he makes a proposition. Moira wants to leave a legacy of herself in Schitt's Creek, the surprised beneficiary being Jocelyn. But before the Roses can leave, uncouth and socially unaware Andy has to sign on the dotted line...
