New York police are engaged in their biggest manhunt since the Linbergh case, looking for the individual they believed to be responsible for a gruesome triple slaying in a Manhattan apartment. The victims include beautiful pulp-fiction True-Crime magazine model, Veronica Gedeon, but her mother and a deaf English lodger who lived with her have also been savagely killed. The prime suspect is a sculptor named Robert Irwin. On the run, he rings the 'Chicago Herald-Examiner' with a lucrative deal: Five thousand dollars in exchange for his exclusive story, his connection with the victim and her family and details on why he committed the murders, (and emasculated himself). The newspaper agrees to pay and Irwin turns himself over to authorities. The sculptor uses the money to hire one of the best lawyers in America to to represent him... and avoids the chair, dying in an institution in 1975.

For the Daily News a doll knocking off a guy is very fine news indeed especially if that guy is her ever-loving husband. A picture of the loathed and despised object of public fury snapped from a camera in a sock at the instant 2,000 volts of 'justice' is delivered? Well, that's circulation one million and climbing...On her walk to the chair it must be hard for Ruthie to be sure which of the two men in her life was the dumbest. The one that signs an insurance policy guaranteeing Ruthie an extra $100,000 if he suffers a violent death or 'Lover-boy' who hits hubby on the noggin with a sash weight only hard enough to wake him up...When Alfred Snyder hires Mamie Ruth Brown as his secretary she is just 19. Theirs is a classic tale of romance. He woos her with dinners at Lindy's, sailboats on the Hudson and an engagement hoop set in a box of chocolates. All is fine and dandy until a band of gold joins the diamond and Ruthie's life shifts from Broadway to Queens. She does what comes natural under such intolerable circumstances. She hooks up with a myopic corset salesman named Judd and takes out an enormous insurance policy on Alfred that pays out double if he suffers a violent death. When 'Lover Boy' misses Alfred's head with two pounds of lead and Ruthie has to finish the job - this is the kind of salacious story the press loves - but the State of New York takes a dim view of husband slaying. Poor Ruthie.

Balding 'Romeo' and ex-WW2 Agent, Raymond Fernandez, and his jealous 'Juliet', nurse Martha Beck, team up to con vulnerable women across the nation. Targeting women in the 'Lonely Hearts' columns, they pose as brother and sister in a bid to rob them of their riches. Fernandez and Beck's dysfunctional relationship takes a grim turn after they murder their first victim, Janet Fay, in Fernandez' Long Island apartment. As many as 20 victims follow before the 'Lonely Hearts Killers' are captured.

Umberto 'Albert' Anastasia is Brooklyn's undisputed prince of organized crime. Albert's other title is 'Lord High Executioner' and they call him that for good reason. Albert is responsible for thousands of murders, because Albert runs 'Murder Incorporated' from out back of a candy store in Brownsville. It's the syndicate button-man's finishing school with alums including Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel, Louis "Lepke" and "Pittsburgh Phil" Strauss... But by 1957 "Murder Inc." has fallen to the Feds and Albert is inviting the displeasure of New York's crime family du jour, the Genovese. Not least for auctioning off full mob membership to any low-life with a spare 50 G's and an Italian sounding name. But how else is the dapper gent to pay for his Park Sheraton Hotel haircuts? Settling into barber chair number four on this crisp October morning, Albert revolves around to face the mirror. With his back to the door, jowls swaddled in a steaming towel, Albert doesn't see the two-man shooter team enter the joint. They are straight out of central casting in sunglasses and black fedoras. The barber sidesteps like a mule as five shots hit the back of the chair. Tangled in toweling, stumbling to his feet Albert grabs at his own reflection as he falls to the marble floor. The guys in the aviators pump another five shots into Albert's chest. Just to be sure... The Park Sheraton Hotel Barber Shop is now a Starbucks.

Long before there is a 'Unabomber', New Yorkers are terrorized over sixteen years by an attacker who plants bombs in major city landmarks from Grand Central to Radio City; subways, libraries phone booths, and restrooms. The bomber sends the Herald Tribune repeated warnings of his attacks and lays out his hatred of The Consolidated Edison Company. Profiling by a Criminal Psychologist is pioneered in the hunt and determined police work finally apprehends the Bomber. He turns out to be a electrician and mechanic named George Metesky with a grudge against his former employers. At trial the smiling Metesky is deemed criminally insane and committed to a state mental hospital. Metesky died aged 90 in 1994.

Irish down and out Michael Malloy finds solace a Bronx dive bar and never pays his tab. Owner, Tony Marino, bar tender Joe Murphy, an under taker named Francis Pasqua, and regular Dan Kriesberg hatch a plan to insure the barfly and then kill him. Over several months they fail to kill him in increasingly outlandish ways. Wood alcohol, poisoned oysters, sandwiches laced with ground glass and carpet tacks, they strip him naked in an alcoholic coma and leave him in a freezing park... they even run him down with a taxi. He comes back through the doors of the bar every time... They finally succeed in gassing him but as they try to make their claims the insurers become suspicious and the gang begins to fight among itself. Tried as the 'Murder Trust' all four men go to the electric chair for their part in the killing of the almost indestructible Mr Malloy.
