By the Numbers

After Fred admits to having one of his "special dreams" that tells him which number to bet on, Lamont forbids him from playing the numbers. Yet, Fred plays the numbers anyway and wins a lot of money and a plan to spend it on a weekend at Las Vegas. So, Lamont engineers a way to hit Fred's soft spot while pilfering him of his winnings at the same time. He gets some of Fred's friends to come by with sob stories about needing money. Bubba claims to needs $250 to get his car out of hock after his ex-wife sues him for back alimony. Then Aunt Ethel claims that she needs $200 for a gall bladder operation. Finally, with Fred down to $50, a reporter shows up asking questions about people who win the at the numbers. The reporter turns out to be a robber who takes the rest of Fred's money. Frustrated, Fred puts a Red Cross sign in the window reading "We Gave".

Fred takes the truck out to get coffee and, while sitting at the red light, is struck in the rear by a white man in a black Cadillac. Returning home, Bubba convinces Fred that the circumstances of the accident could lead to a big cash settlement if Fred is willing to claim that he has whiplash. Lamont is appalled by his dishonesty and is shocked when Fred starts making plans for money has hasn't even received. However, Fred is in for a disappointment when he finds that the police have arrested the man responsible who it turns out actually stole the Cadillac, meaning that Fred can't sue him.

Unknown to Fred, the head dentist at this office is not only competent, but also black.

Fred has a petty argument with Herman Goldstein, the junk dealer who lives across the street. Later, while examining a Revolutionary War rifle that Lamont bought at an auction, Fred accidentally fires it right through his window. Upon inspection, Lamont notices that the bullet also went through Goldstein's front window. Unable to get an answer at the neighbor's house, Fred and Lamont spend the whole night worrying themselves into a frenzy that Goldstein might have been killed by the bullet. After fending off a visit from the cops and from an curious antique dealer, Fred decides to turn himself in. Just then Goldstein comes over the apologize for the fight. He reveals that he after the argument he went across town to visit his son and came back to find a bullet hole not only through his window but through his hat, which was hanging on a chair. After he departs, Fred and Lamont breathe a sigh of relief with only one thing to say: "mazel tov!"

Blood Is Thicker Than Junk

The junk hits the fan when Fred and Lamont have a heated argument over breakfast resulting in Lamont walking out on Sanford and Son. He vows to get another job while Fred vows that he will have Lamont's job filled within 24 hours. Seeking work at the unemployment office, Lamont finds himself on assignment at the salvage yard of Ralph Baxtrum, one of Sanford and Son's chief competitors. Meanwhile, Fred fills Lamont's position by hiring a doofus named Norman who is suppose to pick up a load of bathtubs, but instead comes back with a useless stuffed bear. Lamont gets into an argument with Mr. Baxtrum and quits only a day after starting the job, and Fred fires his new man due to his ineptitude. Fred and Lamont mend their disagreements and decide to reform their partnership despite the fact that both are too proud to admit that they couldn't make it without each other.

Fred demands that he get off the property, but Lamont's heart is softened when the man, named Gus, claims that he is going to kill himself. After Lamont goes to work, the man drives Fred crazy by seeming to always be peering in the window. After giving Gus a glass of water and a sweet roll, Fred dismisses him. When Lamont comes back home for lunch, he and Fred discover once again that Gus is sleeping in the bathtub. This time, Lamont's heart is not softened and he insists that Gus leave. While being evicted the man falls down and claims to be paralyzed, threatening to sue. Fred and Lamont put the man on the couch and Fred tries several tricks to prove that the man is faking. Finally, he decides that he should keep feeding him beer until Gus has to urinate and HAS to get up. He and Lamont set a trap, but Gus runs out of the house shoving Fred to the floor. The next day when Fred and Lamont try to move the tub they find that a neighborhood mutt has had puppies in it.

During the party, two gangsters show up and give Fred and Lamont "an offer they can't refuse" by suggesting that they use the junk business as a front while secretly turning Sanford and Son into a speakeasy. They seem trapped until they call on the one source who can help them out, Aunt Esther.

One night, he invites two guests to the house, Rollo - now named Oyamo - and a Nigerian woman named Olayia who takes a liking to Fred but is appalled by Lamont's disrespect for his father. She reminds Lamont that his heritage is not merely a matter of new clothes and new names but is a matter of changing the heart as well. After they leave, Fred casually calls Lamont by his African name, but discouraged Lamont simply says "The name is Lamont."

Feeling the need to see the world and experience new things, Lamont answers an ad that offers him an opportunity to travel around the world working on a tramp steamer. The only thing to work out is what to do with Fred, so he tries to talk him into moving into an old folks home. Fred is outraged, but eventually relents - but that doesn't mean he isn't willing to make a scene while visiting the place, complaining non-stop and starting fights with the other tenants. Worse, he turns a cold shoulder as Lamont tries to say goodbye. After a few days, Bubba comes by to visit Fred who admits that he's bored stiff, and irritated by persistent invitations from the staff and tenants to join in on banal activities. Bubba confides that Lamont is missing him so much that he thinks he's hearing his voice in the house. So, Fred engineers a plan to get Lamont to change his mind about the trip by making him think that he is actually hearing him. Lamont catches on to the scheme (unbeknownst to Fred) and decides that now is not the time to go.

Pot Luck

Lamont is excited when he buys a possibly authentic Hepplewhite commode from a woman in Beverly Hills for $20, and intends to sell it for a huge profit. Yet, a problem arises the next day when her husband Mr. Osbourne drops by accusing Lamont of taking advantage of her. Osbourne reluctantly buys the piece back from him for $200, making Lamont think that the piece is extremely valuable. The next day another customer drops by, an antiques dealer who is dazzled by the commode and offers Lamont $900 if he can buy it back from Osbourne. Lamont and Fred get into a heated argument over the ethics of the deal, but greedy Lamont won't listen. He buys the piece back from Osbourne, but discovers that the antiques dealer cannot be located. Meanwhile, Fred does his own investigation and finds that the commode is worthless and that the two men are con artists who have worked together to bilk Lamont out of $300. Lamont has egg on his face, while Fred informs him that that: "You been had, bad!"

After some cajoling, Fred is encouraged to try out as well. However, when the three meet the director and the producer, they get a look at the script and discover that it is a pornographic movie. Before they can leave, the place is raided by the police and they land in jail. In the lock-up, Lamont calls Aunt Esther to get them out. Yet, after they are cleared of the charges, Esther won't allow them to be freed, she wants to read to the heathens some scriptures from the Bible first.
