Tom Parker is proud that Sanditon is growing into a popular society resort, though Lady Denham still worries about the financing with his debts. Sydney's demise saddens everyone, hoping he found happiness in Antigua. Charlotte returns with her sister Alison Heywood, who is determined to find them rich husbands since father can't support them after three bad harvests. Georgiana wickedly abuses suitors as assumed gold-diggers, enjoying her power as rich pick. The town is excited by the arrival and incoming parade of a redcoat company commanded by colonel Francis Lennox. Surprisingly, among his officers is destitute Sir Edward Denham, who promises to keep his distance but probably knows about wicked stepsister and ex-lover Esther's desperate inability to give her husband a child. After rescuing tomboy Leonora 'Leo' Colbourne from a startled officer's horse, while her older cousin Augusta just scolds, Charlotte applies to work as their governess and gets the job, despite walking out on their widower father Alexander Colbourne. It becomes known that Sydney had a secret Antiguan research mission. Georgiana crashes the coach she "joy rides" with Alison on the beach, but exercising soldiers rush to the rescue.

To the Parkers' delight, Tom's new party and dance hall gets a great socialite launch, as colonel Francis Lennox invites everybody to his regimental dinner. They're all up to their usual dealing, except the artist Charles Lockhart, who provokes by toasting on the hated Bonaparte whose troops the army defeated, probably the only way to catch Georgina's attention, as she keeps chasing every possible suitor, but receives a worrying letter from her native Antigua. Refusing to be matched for marriage, Charlotte successfully applies as governess for the enigmatic widower estate owner Alexander Colbourne's tomboy daughter Leonora 'Leo' and orphan niece Augusta Markham, who is well-read but even more troublesome, yet Charlotte refuses to simply tame then. Lady Denham worries on about her investment and reluctantly takes in Esther, who desperately seeks to escape infertility, and pregnant Clara.
