Sean is bullied at school and it's getting worse. At home, his mother doesn't seem interested in his problems and is more concerned with making sure Sean babysits his younger brothers while she goes out with her boyfriend. Sean decides to run away from home and whilst wandering the streets he meets Molly, a girl about his own age who shows him an abandoned building where he can spend the night.

Molly reluctantly agrees to let Sean tag along as she tries to make her way back to her old family home. Back at home, Sean's mother is desperate to find him, especially when her boyfriend, Gary, learns the truth about Sean being bullied at school. When a motorway blocks their path, Sean and Molly use a badger tunnel to cross, but when it rains the tunnel starts to flood.

Sean is starting to get homesick, but Molly persuades him to keep going as they get a lift down the canal on a barge. When they finally reach Molly's old home they discover that it's been demolished and her family are gone. Things start to get ugly as Molly takes her frustration out on the barge owner and Sean decides he's had enough and it's time to go home.
