After an apparently lost painting of a nude by a noted painter sells for 38,000 pounds at auction, the consignor, an aging, eccentric artist, is accused of forging the canvas and retains Rumpole to defend him. Rumpole's problems are exacerbated by having his pompous friend, newly appointed Guthrie Featherstone, as the judge on the case. Although his client seems unconcerned that he may be convicted, Rumpole correctly assumes that locating the model for the portrait may hold the key to saving his client.

Rumpole and the Golden Thread

Rumpole travels to Naranga to defend a one-time student, David Mazenze who is charged with murdering Bishop Kareele. What Rumpole finds is a client who is in unusually good spirits, living in relative luxury at police headquarters and who is without an alibi. He is shocked however to learn that Naranga long ago abolished the jury system and that the trial is before a judge only. Rumpole soon finds himself mixed up in local and tribal politics, with the cards clearly stacked against him. Things seem to turn to his advantage when he locates a surprise witness, but finds he has just been a pawn in a much larger game.

Rumpole and the Old Boy Net

Rumpole agrees to defend an outwardly respectable old school couple arrested for running an upper-class brothel. When the are charged with blackmailing a client, Rumpole is frustrated in his efforts to make the accuser's name public by privacy laws and the couple's personal code of honor. Their reluctance to reveal the name of their business partner and client threatens to send them to prison for five years.

Rumpole and the Female of the Species

Tony Timson, a petty thief and former Rumpole client, asks for the barrister to defend him on charges that he was the wheel man in a high profile robbery that was out of his usual league. Not only does one of the thieves testify against him, he's at a loss to explain why some of the robbery loot was found in his washing machine. Meanwhile Rumpole plays one personality off the other in his chambers in order to get Fiona accepted as a member.

Rumpole and the Sporting Life

While on holiday in the country, Rumpole reluctantly agrees to defend Fiona's sister on a charge of murdering her boorish husband. Although she claims the gun was discharged accidentally, the evidence seems against her until Rumpole tears apart the testimony of the inexperienced coroner and tweaks the conscience of the presiding judge, an aging jurist who harbors guilt about an innocent man he sent to the gallows many years before.

The elusive solicitor also is needed by Rumpole as a key witness in a case involving fraudulent mobile home vacation rentals. When even the reliable private investigator F.I.G. Newton cannot locate the slippery Percivale Blythe, Rumpole enlists his wife in an elaborate hoax to smoke out the shifty solicitor.
