8 Episodes 2008 - 2008
Episode 1
Two years ago Martina Mullin and Padraig Whelton bought their first home, a 1950s ex-corporation house in Donnycarney. The front of the house is warm and sunny, but the rear of the house, together with a poorly insulated 1980s extension is cold, dark and dreary and the couple very rarely spend any time in it. They want Dermot to bring warmth and light into their home on a 36,000 Euro budget.
Episode 2
Dolores and Donal O'Connell own a 250 year old house on the picturesque main street in Timahoe, Portlaoise. It was originally a two roomed house but as the family grew Donal added an extension with another two bedrooms. The back of the house is dark and lacks sunlight, so Dermot's plan is to redesign the property to make the most of the sunlight throughout the whole house.
Episode 3
Cathy and Michael Keane and their four children live in an 1840s cottage. Michael added an extension to the back of the house but even then it is still a badly designed cramped warren of tiny rooms. A radical makeover is required and Dermot comes up with a plan to redesign the interior of the whole house and add a glass wraparound extension to the existing one, allowing sunlight to flood in and give the family views of a forest and lake behind the house.
Episode 4
Declan and Judy Cadwell from Clontarf are tired of being crammed together in their small terraced home with their three teenaged sons. Dermot thinks that the boys are so well looked after they won't be leaving any time soon, so he needs to redesign the house for five adults rather than for two parents with three children. His design includes flipping the layout of the house and adding an L-shaped glass extension to the rear to flood the houses with sunlight.
Episode 5
Dermot Bannon tackles a Victorian townhouse off the South Circular Road with a beautiful facade at the front but three unsightly impractical extensions at the rear. The owner, Marie Duffy, who bought the house four years ago, has renovated the front rooms, but hasn't any ideas on what to do with the back part. Dermot decides the extensions were a mistake and need to demolished most of them to make way for a more contemporary living space.
Episode 6
Dermot is in Edenderry in Co. Offaly with Declan and Anne Conlon in the 1980s bungalow that they built. They have since changed the layout several times and the bungalow is now a mess of 14 tiny rooms. The couple realize they've failed and call on Dermot for help, who plans to demolish some walls, refit the entire ground-floor layout and give the house a light and airy open plan design.
Episode 7
Peter and Lisa O'Shea live in a four-bedroom house in Rathfarnham with their twin daughters. They moved into their detached home just three years ago, but shortly afterwards Lisa was diagnosed with MS. Now that her mobility is restricted their house needs to be redesigned, and to include a lift, to allow Lisa to continue to have access to all parts of their family home.
Episode 8
Patrick and Ailish Bates are a young couple from Ballinteer in Co. Dublin. They have lived in a small suburban 1940s cottage for two and a half years and with three growing boys they are running out of space very quickly. They've talked about adding an extension so they enlist Dermot's help to change the layout and extend their cottage.
