In Gaul in 52 B.C., two Roman soldiers, Legionary Titus Pullo and Centurion Lucius Vorenus, are tasked with recovering Julius Caesar's personal Eagle, stolen from his camp in the dead of night. With his campaign in Gaul coming to a successful conclusion, Caesar's popularity is continuing to grow.

Caesar winters his army in Gaul near the Italian border while his enemies in Rome fear that he will do something no Roman General has done: cross the Rubicon with his army. To counter-balance his opponents, Caesar puts his friend Mark Antony up for office as the people's Consul.

With Caesar approaching Rome, Pullo and Vorenus lead an advance party to scout out the level of resistance they might meet. In Rome, Pompey Magnus must decide how to meet the forthcoming threat, even though Caesar seems to have only one Legion with him. To everyone's surprise, Pompey decides to stage a tactical retreat south with the intent to gather his forces and then re-take city. Romans are forced to take sides with anyone staying behind declared a traitor. As a result of the evacuation, Pullo and Vorenus find the city virtually deserted. Vorenus decides to pack it in and return to his home. Pullo on the other makes a quite interesting find of his own. Atia meanwhile takes decisive action when she learns that her daughter Octavia is secretly seeing her husband.

Atia and her family have stayed behind when Pompey and others fled and she now throws a party for her triumphant uncle, Julius Caesar. She clearly has her sights set on the great leader and is puzzled when he sends her a guest list that includes Servilia of the Junii.

Vorenus suffers a major setback as a businessman when the slaves he's invested in die from disease. He visits Eraste Fulman who offers him a job. It isn't exactly what he had in mind however and re-examines the offer of returning to the army which Mark Antony had earlier made to him. Pullo and Octavian track down Niobe's brother-in-law and get him to admit that he was her lover. Julius Caesar become a laughing stock when graffiti artists draw lewd pictures of him and Servilia on the city walls. He has to end his relationship with her to save his marriage to Calpurnia and maintain the political influence of her family. Servilia sets out to find who is responsible for this and vows revenge. Caesar meanwhile has made an offer of truce to Pompey but in the end decides to take his army south to finish him off but finds his foe has fled to Greece.

Caesar pursued Pompey to Greece but the tide has turned and it's Caesar who is on the run. He contacts Mark Antony, who he left in charge in Rome, to come and join him with the 13th Legion but Antony seems to be in no hurry. The presence of Niobe's sister is the only sour note in their house.

As they try to reach Caesar in Greece, the shipwrecked Vorenus and Pullo confront an unexpected dilemma. Back in Rome, Atia again sends Octavia to beg protection from Servilia, who complies readily to encourage her growing friendship with Octavia.

Rejected by Vorenus and Eirene and racked by guilt for the killing of Eirene's fiancé out of a jealous rage, Pullo has sunk to working as an assassin for the gangster Erastes. When Pullo gets arrested for killing one of Caesar's popular opponents, he condemns himself by refusing to name who hired him.

In the aftermath of their arena exploits, both Pullo and Vorenus have become icons and heroes to the people of Rome. As a result, Vorenus' defense of his actions to Caesar lands him in an unexpected position of power when Caesar, after proclaiming himself dictator for life, makes Vorenus a senator. In the meantime, Pullo's unexpected return to Vorenus' household to recover from his injuries away from a medical hospital, is not appreciated by his former slave Eirene who still holds a grudge against Pullo for killing her boyfriend. Elsewhere, Caesar decides to overhaul the senate by adding some surprising new faces, much to the chagrin of the old guard, including Brutus. As Servilia hurdles the final obstacle to her revenge plan against Caesar by secretly organizing the conspirators to assassinate Caesar in the senate on the Ides of March, she finally reveals her revenge and complex scenario to Atia and Octavian, while her servant learns the scandalous truth about Niobe's baby and informs Vorenus who has a fatal confrontation with Niobe.
