The inspector Rocco Schiavone, with the rank of Vice-Questore, is not what one understands by an exemplary police officer. He's moody, cynical, and he doesn't take the law very seriously. For disciplinary reasons, the inveterate Roman was transferred to the Italian Alps - to the Aosta Valley. Not only does the harsh climate of the mountain region bother him, the city dweller also feels annoyed by some of his team. He trusts his assistant Italo Pierron and the policewoman Caterina Rispoli to be responsible. Even the relationship with his lover Nora is not unaffected. He is faced with an opaque murder case that demands all his energy: a man is run over by a snow cat that drives back to its station on a snow-covered pulling path in the evening after its use. Luisa Pec, the dead man's wife, hits the news like a blow. She and her husband were in the process of converting their house into a modern mountain inn and - she is pregnant. Schiavone's suspicions are directed against Luisa's former fiance, a certain Omar. It turns out, however, that Luisa is not sincere: her husband was unable to procreate. While Schiavone puzzles over the motive and perpetrator, Sebastiano, a close friend from Rome, seduces him into an illegal operation around a truck smuggling marijuana. As if everything had conspired against Schiavone, even this ingenious coup doesn't go as planned.

Following his sense of justice, the Vice-Questore beat him up. When Schiavone learns that the young man has again brutally raped two girls, he does not rest. In his current case, however, the pieces seem to come from different sets: two fatal accidents in a van with stolen license plates, the mysterious disappearance of schoolgirl Chiara Berguet after a wild night at the disco and dubious goings-on in a children's clothing store. During a nighttime search of the store - of course without a court order and with his young assistant Italo Pierron as an accomplice - Inspector Schiavone gets on the trail of a big deal. The Sicilian mafia is currently in the process of penetrating the tranquil Aosta Valley through credit transactions. Chiara's parents, who own a construction company that recently had to survive financial turbulence, have also got involved with the criminal organization - and are now paying dearly for it. In order to exert pressure, their daughter was kidnapped. Fearing for the life of their only child, Giuliana and Pietro are not being honest with the police. The case gradually climbs to level ten on Schiavone's personal annoyance scale: "really annoying". The inspector suspects that something is wrong on the part of the blackmailers - and that the hostage is therefore in great danger.

The Vice-Questore hopes to make progress with his investigation into the respected banker Laura Turrini, who doesn't just hang out with "good" society. At a party in her villa, Rocco meets the high-class prostitute Amelia Abela and meets an old acquaintance: the ex-terrorist Walter Cremonesi, who is now free thanks to an amnesty. Rocco is very interested in what brings him and another shady party guest to Aosta. The inspector hopes to get important clues from Chiara Berguet, who is suffering badly from the consequences of the kidnapping. Her desperate father, Petro Berguet, whose construction company is on the verge of bankruptcy, blames the Turrinis for his misfortune and does not want his daughter to continue to associate with their spoiled son Max. Thanks to the teenagers, Rocco gets on a trail that brings him one step closer to solving the problem. However, he has no idea that he is in danger.

The crime has more to do with Rocco than the Vice-Questore initially thought: the perpetrator is neither a contract killer nor a common criminal who wants to settle an old score. Rocco must face his greatest pain and a secret. The fact that his police colleague Caterina stands by him in this difficult hour causes his resolve to waver.
