A young female corpse is found inside a dumpster, so the detectives seek her boyfriend 'Spike' as prime murder suspect. The pursuit of Spike in a subway station leads Frankie to kill a man found unarmed, triggering an Internal Affairs investigation. Closer investigation by the team reveals that the man's gun gun was removed from the scene by somebody who later links to the crime. Frankie has moved into a new apartment, disclosed as Angela tries to rid herself of an uncle's unsightly but free armchair. Maura welcomes Kent Drake, an apprentice coroner who served as doctor in Afghanistan, onto her staff, testing each-other.

The death of professor of poetry Mark Harris, who didn't get tenure, on his boat during a bass fishing tournament requires a murder investigation. A family's minivan bumps into the rear of truck with a refrigerator strapped in the back, which opens and a male corpse falls into the van. The pickup of the fridge was made before 9am so the team tries to find witnesses that might have seen who dumped it. Maura running the victims prints through the database alerts FBI art theft agent Burns: he was an internationally most-wanted criminal, so whatever brought the man to Boston must have been major. Fibers covered in paint recovered from the victim's body send Maura and Jane to the Boston Museum of Art. Although the emphatically uncooperative director insisted that nothing was stolen, fearing a costly PR disaster, the team discovers that a 20 million dollar painting was swapped for a replica, and traces it down to a bloody finale. Meanwhile Angela expects unqualified Frankie to repair his father's miserable plumbing in Korsak's bar.

The nasty neighbor Dolores frequently complained about the dog, denies any action as she's about to move and hints at rare family visits and a noisy row. Korsak prevents the dog being hastily put down by animal control, finding him harmless and friendly, so preps Jane to walk him at a dog show in case a jealous competitor -eternal seconds are questioned- attempts again killing him, which yields a confession from Mona's junk daughter Sara, but Maura finds she used a negligible dose of regular rat poison, while Mona died from less of the other, stronger kind. Mona's 'good' daughter was the only one aware the ancestral home, which Mona refused to sell, could fetch triple its value for a new hospital wing project. Maura has her own way to handle Kent's stolen kiss and reluctance to inform a victim's family.

An enigmatic corpse in Boston is hard to identify, sharing a Los Angeles murder victim's similar name and fingerprints, so the case must be investigated jointly with the LAPD. Although Frankie craves a 'paid holiday' in California, which Jane loathes, the latter must go while Maura has a different budget to pay a simultaneous visit and enjoys exploring relaxed L.A. as well as a like-minded colleague. While they wade through false identities and covers, the home team looks into Jane's accounts having been hacked, which crime turns out related with the arson of her apartment. Korsak agrees to double-date Ron and Angea with his Kiki.

Victim John Franklin was the charismatic boss of an NGO which organizes explosives removal in areas where the US officials aren't welcome over for that job, but there were internal tensions about spending donations on actual work or HQ benefits. Ron asks Angela to attend a Paris conference with him. Nina finds the hacker targeting Jane and Maura, only to discover she has been released from jail, and is most uncooperative.
