The sniper killed the first victim but only badly injured the second one, an accountant, who is now police-guarded in the same hospital. Maura chooses to face the ending her relationship with Jack, who must accept tenure in and re-locate to New Mexico to be close to his daughter after his ex-wife got a dream job with NASA there.

The detectives find out that Ronald was a bigamist, having two wives in two different states, who may have found out.
