Inspector John River sees what he explains to psychologist Rosa Fallows as being 'manifestations', dead people with whom he can converse, notably his colleague Stevie, shot whilst on duty, but also Thomas Cream, a Victorian poisoner and Erin, a young girl whose boyfriend Aten was accused of her murder but whom River is able to help. At a press conference regarding Stevie's murder, River's odd behaviour alarms his superiors DCI Chrissie Read and Marcus McDonald when he sees another 'manifestation', a young robber whom he pursued to his death and who possibly killed Stevie.

Episode 2

Excluded from Stevie's wake by her family, who consider taking the law into their own hands, River comes under criticism for the death of the suspect Riley and is physically attacked by Riley's pregnant girlfriend Tia although Chrissie Read tells River that Stevie got into Riley's car. However Tia's information leads to the fact that Riley may not have been in the car with Stevie and soon Riley has become another of River's 'manifestations', declaring his innocence and exhorting River to find the real killer.

Episode 3

Having received his psychiatric report River discovers that Stevie had a second phone. It reveals calls from the ex-convict brother she helped put away Jimmy, but he had an alibi for the time of her death. However there is evidence to suggest she led a somewhat risqué double life and River's partner Ira is perturbed that River is keeping facts from Chrissie. The latest manifestation is Jordy Merton, a site foreman who died in suspicious circumstances and whose wife River spares from learning about his secret. The more menacing manifestation of Cream, however, starts to appear more frequently.

Episode 4

The police are anxious to trace Haider, a young Somali with whom Stevie had several phone conversations. His co-worker Khaalid believes Haider was happily married and would not have had a sexual affair with Stevie whilst Stevie's uncle Michael tells River Haider asked him for work which Michael refused, sure he was an illegal immigrant. Haider is found but it is too late for him to provide any information. After she sees River arguing with the ghost of Cream, Rosa invites him to a therapy session for people who hear voices. A smiling Stevie is, as ever, waiting for him.

Episode 5

River discovers that Stevie had been in contact with Chrissie's husband, judge Tom allegedly for advice for a friend, but he keeps it from Chrissie, who establishes that Stevie knew Haider well. River also learns from immigration advice worker Ema that the pair visited her together. and he suspects that Stevie was investigating an immigration scam. After making his peace with Rosa he arrests Fedor, a Moldovan suspected of killing Haider and Ema believes he was bribed to murder him, not only for money but for fake immigration papers from corrupt judges. CCTV evidence links Fedor to somebody River knows socially.

Episode 6

Tormented by Cream, River discovers that Michael Bennigan was a shareholder in one of the companies that, through a legal loophole, employed illegal immigrants. At the same time Tom Read is charged with corruption, his confession staggers Chrissie. It also becomes obvious to River that Stevie's young brother Frankie is more involved in the circumstances of her death than first believed and was innocently instrumental in bringing about what happened to her.
