Episode 1

Leamon Family and Fiddes Family

45 mins

The Fiddes family from Royal Wootton Bassett swap homes, budgets and lives with the Leamon family from Southampton. They live just 48 miles away from each other but their financial circumstances are worlds apart. Matt and Moniqe Fiddes are among the wealthiest 10% of people in Britain. They have two children and Matt has three daughters from his first marriage. They live in a six-bedroom house set in 60 acres. Matt is the founder of a hugely successful chain of martial arts schools, with over 700 branches worldwide. They have a weekly budget, after bills, of over £1,500. The Leamons are in the poorest 10%. Kim and Andy live in a four-bedroom terrace house on a council estate with their two children. Andy works in an emergency response call centre for the elderly and Kim is registered disabled following an operation to treat a work-related injury. The Leamons' weekly budget after bills is around £170. The Fiddes' spending includes eating out, shopping trips and outings. It's not uncommon for them to blow around £500 in a day on family treats. Matt made his first million by 21 so he hasn't had to worry about money for most of his adult life. He doesn't know what a bill looks like. Moniqe thinks he'll struggle on a bottom-10% budget but how will they both cope with living in a terraced house when they're not used to having any neighbours? The Leamons have lived in their house since 2009 and Kim's hoping for a week in the countryside. They haven't had a holiday for years and their usual date night is a movie on the sofa at home. Kim's mobility issues mean she's normally housebound. How will the family adapt to a week of fine dining, shopping trips and theme parks?

Alsoud Family and Lee Family

45 mins

The Alsoud family swap homes and budgets with the Lee family. Both families live in Wolverhampton less than half an hour apart, but there's a huge gap between their financial circumstances. Mahrous and Rana Alsoud are among the wealthiest 10% of people in Britain, they grew up in Syria before moving to the UK in 2000. They have four children: Yasmin (19), Angela (16), Zain (15) and Farah (12). They live in a five-bedroomed house, three bathrooms, three receptions and a large garden. Mahrous is a cardiologist and Rana is a paediatrician. After their mortgage, their weekly budget is just under £3,000. The Lees are among the UK's poorest 10%. Single parent Claire lives with her four children: Jordan (23), Nathan (17), Rose (10) and Kiye (9) in a three-bedroom terraced house. Claire sleeps in a bed downstairs in the living room and works as financial clerk in a local school; her weekly budget after bills is £171. The Alsoud children enjoy horse riding, swimming, tennis, piano lessons and learning Arabic. Mahrous works away in Durham, while Rana's job is full time, meaning the family doesn't spend much time together. The Lee family spends lots of time together, and find different ways to have fun without spending money: they have board game evenings and movie nights at home as they can't afford to go to the cinema. After growing up without many resources, Rana is hoping the swap will give her children a taste of her own background. How will the families react to such huge changes not only in their budget, but also in the amount of time they spend together?
