The lovely circus performer, Arlette (Lorraine Clewes), is travelling on the Paris-Milan express with a caged wild man of Borneo. The wildman is Arlette's husband (Tom Duggan) in disguise. When Arlette flirts with a potential booker of the act, the wild man really gets wild and there is a wild-man hunt. But all ends happily when it is revealed that the booker is not such a chump as to really believe in wildmen - only in wild husbands, Running parallel to this is a piece of chicanery going on in the train's dining car. The wealthy American almost falls into a trap to buy a fake old master set by a pretty travelling acquaintance but thanks to another smart bit of fakery on the part of the train's conductor, the confidence tricksters have to return their loot.

A man named Brown, from Texas, walks into the Apex shipping company's offices in London and hands an eight-year-old letter to an executive, Major Robert Morgan. He tells Morgan the letter is from a prisoner of war who died - his name: Derek Sellers. This releases a flood of memories for the Major and he begins to tell the story of a "heel." They had been rivals for the same girl, and for a single seat on an escape plane. The occupant had to be drawn by lot. Thinking that Sellars had won, Morgan knocks him out and takes his seat on the plane. However, the postwar denouement comes as a shock to everyone.
